hero of the month: august

i'm going to try something new here. most of us are probably news junkies, but sometimes things can slip past in our busy daily lives. i would have liked to have whittled this down to just one, but it was impossible. i intend to make this a monthly feature.

fire lieutenant CHARLES "CHIP" McCARTHY and fire fighter JONATHAN CROOM, of the buffalo fire department, died on 24 august 09, after becoming trapped in the basement of a burning deli. they had entered on a search and rescue, as it was reported that a person had been heard yelling for help from inside. no other bodies were recovered from the scene.

fire captain TEDMUND HALL and fire specialist ARNALDO "ARNIE" QUINONES, of the los angeles county fire department, died on 30 august 09 when the vehicle they were in overturned on mount gleason, near acton, california after being overtaken by a rapidly advancing wild fire which encompassed/burned 42,000 acres at that time.

we here at the OH, bama FILES hope all will take the time to remember the sacrifice these public servants made. while they may not be from our communities, we can all sleep at night knowing countless others, like these fine men, stand ready to help us if the need should arise. take a minute and thank the next cop, fireman, or paramedic you see.

i am reminded of a quote by GEORGE S. PATTON, 'IT IS FOOLISH AND WRONG TO MOURN THE MEN WHO DIED. RATHER WE SHOULD THANK GOD THAT SUCH MEN LIVED.'

finally, i want to recognize milwaukee mayor TOM BARNETT, who while attending the wisconsin state fair, responded to a woman's call for assistance. seems a 20 year old drunk male was trying to take his daughter from grandma, in violation of a court order. when BARNETT stepped in to try to calm the situation, the male struck him about the head and shoulders with a metal pipe. BARNETT fought the attacker off, who fled and was later arrested.
BARNETT later said he was no hero and only did what others would have done in the same circumstance. BARNETT also related that the attack happened very quickly. two things here. TOM found out what most seasoned cops know, which is things can turn to shit in a hurry, and whether you like it or not TOM, you are a hero, because most would have stood by trying to get cell phone footage of the incident. glad you survived, just like the gunny said in full metal jacket, 'he's got guts, and sometimes guts is enough'.

semper infidelis

from the halls of saul alinsky, to the shores of mecca's vineyard
we constrain our country's potential, thru bad science and legislatively,
first to criticize our service members efforts, never had honor to keep clean,
we are proud to hold the title of the democrat par-tee...

semper infidelis, i can't think of a better way to describe the modern liberal.
always unfaithful. here are just some of the examples that come to mind, feel free to jot down any you think of;

ENERGY and the ENVIRONMENT; the lincoln of our times campaigned on and continues to espouse the virtues of renewable energy and cutting our dependence on foreign oil.
this week it was revealed that the US is going to give 2 billion dollars to brazil and a company george soros owns 22% of, for oil exploration and production. all at a time when we can't explore or drill right here at home and we are saddling ourselves with cap and trade.

THE WAR ON TERROR, er, GLOBAL CONTINGENCY PLAN: after both b. hussein and AG eric holder said they had no intention to investigate or prosecute CIA personnel regarding interrogation techniques, it was announced this week that the justice department is planning on naming a special prosecutor to begin investigating "torture" against terrorist detainees.

HEALTH CARE; during the week that ted kennedy dies, after fighting with all the money and power that the kennedy name and fame carries, we find out that obama has authorized the reprinting of "your life, you choice,' a VA pamphlet which nudges disabled veterans toward giving up on life. this while the democrats deny there will be any 'death panels' under the public (government) option they are pushing. that's if you're from one of the politically connected families i guess.

SOCIAL SECURITY; no increase for the next 2 years grandma in your social security check. wonder if congress will vote to not give themselves raises during this time, or better yet, a pay cut. but it was always the republicans who would have you eating dog food.

THE DEFICIT; the government is just now telling us that the deficit is projected to increase to 9 TRILLION DOLLARS over the next ten years. this is due to the government bailout of the UAW aka GM and CHRYSLER, the banks, government run FANNIE and FREDDIE, et al. barrack and friends have quadrupled the national deficit in just 8 short months.

ME and YOU; how about the total contempt shown by members of congress to the american public at town hall meetings? we're nazis, brown shirts, klan members, crazed homicidal bombers and in general an unruly mob. they are shocked and dismayed at the anger and hostility they are encountering at the town halls. this despite all that i have pointed out and more.

anybody think the government has not broke ranks with us? anyone think congress still remembers it's a government of the people, by the people, and for the people?

this post in NO WAY was intended to demean the character or dedication of the men and women, past or present, of the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS. it is in part, through their vigilance and sacrifice over the last 233 years, in war and peace, that liberty's light has continued to shine, and freedom's bell continues to ring. carry on devil dogs!!!

your life, their choice

' your life, your choice' is the name of a pamphlet cooked up and distributed by the veterans administration beginning in 1997, under then philanderer-in-chief bill clinton. it advises or asks veterans to take stock of their personal situation and make decisions on the value of their continued existence. evil bush outlawed it and the wonderful lincoln of our times has resurrected it. i guess mrs. palin was telling the truth about death panels.

it's ironic how every time the republicans tried to do anything to improve medicaid, medicare or social security, oldsters were told how they would be forced to choose between prescriptions or eating dog food. the mother in law actually cried when we helped sign her up for the medicare prescription plan. the quote was, ' bush is trying to kill me!!' . asked recently if she was saving any money the reply was a weak 'yes.' i have yet to see her eat any mighty dog.

a few years ago my dad had a portion of his foot amputated because he refused to follow doctors orders in regards to caring for his diabetes. he spent a little over 70 days in a rehab hospital. after 30 days medicare refused to pay the entire bill for his continued stay. his portion would have been about $135/day or $5400 for the rest of the time he was there. the good news is after retirement, he kept his insurance. the $5400 was only the cost of the bed and vittles and does not include the cost of medicine or medical appliances (wound pump). dad told me his total out of pocket cost for that stay was................about $125.

now, we have a president telling us we need government health care reform. seems like pop's evil insurance company did ok by him, and the mother in law? she recently overcame lung cancer through medicare funded treatments, as she continued to smoke. can't see too much in need of fixin' here, except a couple of folks be more responsible for themselves.

uhhhh, them dems just hate going to these town halls and having to listen to you constituents. you bad brown shirt wearing, federal building blowing up, klan robe wearing, astro turf fucks. how dare you stand and ask questions of the people you elected and pay? guess the lincoln of our times, and his buddies, forgot what the original said about a government 'of the people, by the people, for the people.'

i also like how dems point to how great VA medical coverage is. today it was revealed that the government run VA sent out 1200 erroneous "you got ALS/ lou gehrig's disease', letters. sound like you want these jokers running your shit for you? i'll pass. where is the liberal media? they went bat shit when paint was peeling off the walls and W was in charge. our vets deserve THE BEST not an, 'it was a coding error', excuse. seems disingenuous for the media and liberal congressmen to have cried out over service member suicides during bush's term, but now to allow the reprinting and distribution of this pamphlet.

stay vigilant friends. don't be fooled by the medical cooperative talk. it's still the government and they can't even efficiently run cash for clunkers.

Study: Games are depressing...or are they?

Buzz up!

August 20 10:42 A.M.

Depressed

The average gamer is 35, overweight, and more likely to be depressed, says a new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study, which was carried out in the Seattle-Tacoma area, found that gamers reported "lower extraversion, consistent with research on adolescents that linked video-game playing to a sedentary lifestyle and overweight status, and to mental-health concerns."

It also indicated a curious difference between male and female gamers: the former proved more overweight and reported more Internet usage than non-gamer men, while female gamers reported more depression and lower general health than non-gamer women.

But which comes first, the games or the poor health? The researchers hypothesized that depressed individuals might be turning to games as a means of self-medication, immersing themselves in a game's world as a way of forgetting about real-life troubles.

"Habitual use of video games as a coping response may [provide] a genesis for obsessive-compulsive video-game playing, if not video-game addiction," one researcher told MSNBC. The study calls for "further research among adults to clarify how to use digital opportunities more effectively to promote health and prevent disease."

As luck would have it, a study at East Carolina University funded by Bejeweled maker Popcap Games is also investigating the possible mental health benefits of game playing. Having already discovered that Bejeweled can improve mood and heart rhythms, the Carolina group is about to embark on an investigation in an attempt to determine whether games like Bejeweled can also deliver clinically significant improvements to depression sufferers.

"The research is part of a broad array of unconventional efforts that video game companies are devising to find new markets for their products," says Shankar Vedantam, writing this week for the Washington Post. "Many of these steps are based on the idea that depression and other disorders -- as well as everyday stress and worry -- involve systematic patterns of thought and self-doubt, and that games can distract people and put them in a different mental zone."

my take:

somebody commissioned a study to figure this shit out? did it include any findings about their asexual reproduction capabilities? next the government will spend money to try to determine why the sun is hot, and what that means long term.

news from your radio

my job includes a lot of driving. to cut through the top 40 drivel, i have satellite radio. this does not keep me from listening to talk radio however. yeah, i like rush and mark levin, and as a consequence i get the news 2 to 3 times an hour. with school back in session, the local station has been playing interviews with some state health bureaucrat. the topic has been...............playground safety. one of the spots had her stating that we need to be extra vigilant during recess, as falls account for more than like 75% of playground injuries. she went on to say that the injuries include the standard skinned knees and elbows, to broken bones and knocked out teeth, to spinal injuries and paralysis. another spot had her saying to remove all drawstrings from hoodies to help avoid the #1 cause of playground fatalities....strangulation!!!!

GOD DAMN!! WTF is going on at school these days?? in twelve years of public schooling i saw 2 incidents of broken arms, one of which happened during a wrestling match. i'm in my 40's and have never heard of an accidental playground strangulation. i'm not saying this is a bad idea, i just wonder how many kids are getting iced on the merry-go-round year in and year out.

i believe the government needs to rethink its priorities, stop worrying about health care reform and work on prevention. 5 day waiting period on slides and see-saws. jump rope and monkey bar free school zones. it all started with that insidious dodge ball game, which liberals were never good at.

i can see it now. muffin, here is your backpack,germ-ex, and home work. now put on your bubble wrap suit... i know its hot dear, but the school says you have to wear it. no suit, no indoctrination. yes i'm sure whatever they are serving in the cafeteria is good for you.

who am i? why am i here?

just something short to let you know the reason for my existence. my good buddy from the army, ski, aka. the lightning man, got me started on blogging. we were tight running buddies while assigned to ft. riley in the early 90's. not to get all dennis hopper photographer-esque on ya, but the guy is a freakin' genius, man. he can think up responses quicker on his feet, to most topics, faster than anyone i know. we are so similar it seems like we are twins, and i consider him a brother. go visit him at; GLOBAL DOMINATION THROUGH APPLIED INACTIVITY.
