i like ron paul's domestic agenda, i really do. but that being said he is a fuckin' kook. take him to the beach, let him gaze out across the ocean, and he just gets weird. don't worry about IRAN or the nukes they want to not only possess, but probably use against ISRAEL. islam is NO threat to us. it just goes on and fucking on.

like today in des moines, where he told his assembled minions, in part;.....it is not our business to solve all the problems of the world, and get involved in all these conflicts of the world. We need to make our nation a great nation once again. If we want to influence the rest of the world, we should do that by setting a great standard. A great standard of individual liberty. A standard of prosperity and sound money, and a foreign policy where we mind our own business. When we have that greatness, we won't have to try to force it down the throats of others, by bombing and raiding those countries. They will want to be like us, because we are a great nation and have that prosperity...

really? i thought we are so hated in the world due to our prosperity. we consume about 25% of the worlds oil while only accounting for 5% of the world population. without that consumption, . we would not be the world leader in economic output.

and that dear friends means we would not be able to support our military, which we use to stick our nose into the worlds business. which also means, bleeding hearts, we would not be able to provide aid to earthquake stricken "countries " like haiti, or tsunami ravaged indonesia, which directly benefited from 23 U.S. Navy ships and 43 helicopters, that provided humanitarian aid at the U.S. taxpayers expense.

the last time i checked Ron, people were literally dying to get into this country, while damn few are constructing homemade rafts, and sailing off, looking for a better life in cuba. nor are they paying ridiculous sums to be secreted behind a dashboard and smuggled into mexico.

i know you paulites think we should all just....

but that is not how life fuckin' works. to prove it to you, here's a little test. take all your signs of prosperity (money, jewelry, personal electronic devices) and head to any inner city in the US. the trick is not having any means of defending yourself. let me know how long you are able to hold on to your shit. the world works the same way. just ask the people of the 2011 london riots.

book review: WARRIOR POLICE

i stole the idea of doing book reviews from good friend SKI, who apparently neither reads or rights any longer. i'm sending the book in the mail to you brother.

i just finished reading WARRIOR POLICE by LTC. (RET) Gordon Cucullu and Chris Fontana, to my knowledge the first book about the ARMY's MILITARY POLICE CORPS. the authors were able to write the book based in large part because they embedded with MP units in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN and conducted 1000 or more interviews.

the story of the MILITARY POLICE CORPS involvement begins at bagram in afghanistan shortly after 9/11, working with the first EPW's of the WAR ON TERROR. the book details how MP units were excluded during the opening moves of IRAQI FREEDOM, which allowed weapons caches to be looted, the contents most probably used against coalition forces during the long insurgency. the authors also cover the REGIMENTS efforts to rebuild the IRAQI police and train the AFGHAN NATIONAL POLICE, as well as the use of LAW ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS (retired civilian police) to help ferret out corruption.

for my taste and expectations the book was light on actual first hand accounts as told by the troops on the ground. that being said there are some very compelling stories of bravery and sacrifice between the covers. like the story of LEIGH ANN HESTER, the first woman since WWII to be awarded the SILVER STAR and the first woman in history to receive that award for actions in combat, helping to break the back of an insurgent ambush.

MARISSA STROCK who lived despite massive injuries and the loss of both legs to an IED blast. STROCK embodies the warrior, or SOLDIER'S CREED, wishing to return to IRAQ to avenge her fallen comrades deaths. right beside hers, is the story of TODD WILLARD PARTRIDGE, who lost both his legs and his life to an IED while racing to help others who had been struck by a previous IED. horribly wounded, PARTRIDGE steered his stricken vehicle away from dismounted troops to avoid causing injury to them.

the book also contains the names of 163 MILITARY POLICE CORPS soldiers killed during the WAR ON TERROR which was current as of march 16, 2011. my first platoon leaders name is on this list.

as i read the first hand accounts, i was so proud, but completely unsurprised by the valor shown by the those who wear the crossed pistols. their dedication to duty and resolve under adverse conditions is the hall mark of all our men and women under arms.

an important side note here, is that the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to the VALHALLA PROJECT, which was established by the authors.

new years rocking eve?

normally i would not waste my time on any new years eve show. if not working, i would be sleeping, or if the moon and stars aligned, nailing the frau. however the kids are getting older and begged to stay up late, so the wife let them watch the dick clark show.

for the record i have always felt this show was lame. additionally, what type of loser must you be to stay home and watch this? but last night was particularly god awful. dick looked pretty good, while fighting through the aftermath of a stroke. sounded like shit, which did nothing to raise my spirits or motivate me to persevere in the new year.

the musical guests really sucked. PITBULL, i'm coming to take your fortune. if jumping around in a tux with your bow tie undone shouting 'let's go', equals talent while someone else sings, you belong to me.

speaking of shit, LADY GAGA appeared to dress initially as a turd

pretty sure that's cucumber seeds and celery strings, not sequins. Later, she dressed as a sand dollar.

when asked to describe what she was wearing, (the sand dollar get up), she replied she didn't know, but it was VERSACE. what the fuck ever. just goes to show that the age old adage still applies, a fool and their money are soon parted, in my untrained fashion critic opinion.

for the second week in a row the DETROIT LIONS have come from behind to win. against the VIQUEENS last week and the COWGIRLS this week, they have overcome a 17 or more point deficit at the half to win. for the first time since 1980 they have opened a season 4 and 0, and CALVIN JOHNSON is the first receiver since chris carter to catch at least 2 or more touchdowns in 4 consecutive games.

the win was sparked by interceptions returned for touchdowns by former COWGIRL, BOBBY CARPENTER as well as 1 of 56 yards by CHRIS HOUSTON.

the amazing drop in gas prices

in the last 10 days to 2 weeks gas prices in our area have PLUNGED from around $3.59 to $3.19 a gallon, with a bottom below 3 dollars forecast. why?

why suddenly has gas become "cheap" again? is it due to a glut of crude oil on the market? have our friends at OPEC started producing more oil? maybe we can attribute the drop in price to less regulation and more exploration here at home. economists blame it on the global recession. they say that prices historically drop as the summer driving/vacation season ends. i don't believe any of that shit.

i think it has everything to do with the president's dismal approval numbers. who remembers the meteoric rise in prices in the run up to the 2008 elections, designed probably by the likes of obama supporter george soros and others, in an attempt to make republicans look bad? remember soros nearly destroyed the bank of england, and currently looks to be positioning himself to destroy the euro.

wrecking our economy to get an imbecile elected, to preside over our decline, and then keep him there, would be a walk in the park for soros. think i'm full of shit? consider this, during the first 26 months of BUSH'S first term, gas prices increased 7 percent. during the first 26 months of obama's hopefully only term, gas prices have increased 67 percent!!!! that is 9 and one half times higher than during the BUSH presidency. and those numbers are only good as of february 2011, and at that time an average high of $3.10 a gallon. we are still above that price as i write this.

also for your edification is this little factoid. this year is the HIGHEST EVER for the average national price for a gallon of gas at $3.56. all of this still takes into account the nearly 4 dollar a gallon price at the end of the second BUSH term, that i previously alluded to.

bottom line, i think this is just a ruse to keep simple minded voters in camp, letting them think there really is light at the end of the obama train wreck tunnel, and that hope and change might still work for them.

the children's mother renewed her agitation with me this weekend. i called her out for dropping and leaving a necklace i bought her on the bedroom floor.

proving that an item she claims does not trouble her continues to fester, she quickly jumped my shit over not wearing my wedding ring. 'so what, you never even wear your ring!'

apples to oranges, as i know where it is and don't leave it laying on the floor.

'don't even speak to me about that until you start wearing your ring again.'

for some reason, she can't get over the fact i don't wear it because, when first married, it caused me significant problems. while jumping a fence one day it got hung up on a barb. this caused me to hang literally one handed from the fence. i got down, but also got an infection. i have never worn it since, and as an aside, do not wear any jewelry, except a watch. that is odd in and of itself, as i'm late every where i go.

so to appease her, i offered to take the ring to a jeweler, have it melted down and formed into a prince albert, which i could wear all the time.

she seems a bit cool to that idea. we 'll see if she changes her mind.

.....is death and taxes, right? wrong. i went to the county treasurers office friday to renew my car tags. the line is huge, nothing new here. a couple of women are coming out, one is putting her new decal on. says she waited 2 hours in line. the other tells me they are working with number 9 in line and she is 78. she has decided to head off to lunch and come back later. sounds like a winner to me, so i go grab 79 and head off for about an hour.

i return after procuring some books at borders for cheap. what a sad story that is, but you will never hear obamie crying about those lost jobs. the tax collectors have worked their fingers to the bone and are now serving 62. i sit and dig into a werewolf story i had been wanting to read for some time.

there are tons of people waiting in line. i consider selling my spot because i have a secret. i don't have to renew until the end of october , most of these folks must renew by the last day of august. the only reason i'm here at all is because all the kids are in school and i just got paid for a good deal of overtime.

i think i could probably approach any of the guys tying their shoe laces together to end their misery, or perhaps some of the moms who appear ready to beat their children to death. probably make twenty easy from a member of this crew and come back next week.

i'm certain it is not illegal but wonder if it is unethical. i sit and read. 25 minutes go by and they call my number. the incredulity written on every ones face with high numbers, ahead of me in line, as i fairly skip to the front, is priceless.

a young guy is working the counter which is somewhat odd , as it has seemed in the past that only old angry fat women work at the DMV. the conversation goes rapidly down hill.

QUESTION, what state tea party did mcvey belong to mr. president?

doubling down on his "dialed down" rhetoric, obie told cnn on tuesday august 16 that we need to be on guard against lone wolf attacks. "The risk that we're especially concerned over right now is the lone wolf terrorist, somebody with a single weapon being able to carry out wide-scale massacres of the sort that we saw in Norway recently... i was sitting in the shade out front yesterday, trying to read as the kids rode their bikes. i was continuing to feel under the weather because of one of my quarterly sinus infections, which was keeping us from the pool, the children's first choice in diversion.

we had just come outdoors after the markets closed, down 513 points, eliminating the rest of the gains for the year. my income is not tied to the roller coaster the market has become, since the democrats took over congress and obama smooth talked his way into the oval office, but a good portion of my retirement is. i could retire next year, (then go get another job), or stay10 more to reach "full retirement". i know in my heart 10 means 12 or 13, based on the age of the youngest.

i wonder how much luck i have left at work, which has been described as 95% boredom-5% sheer terror. as the economy erodes, we see more and more action. those who are out of work would call it job security.

my buddy called the day before and said he would not be able to attend an event that he normally does for the second year running. not because of lack of time or a too busy work schedule, but because of his hours being cut and the rise of energy prices.

think about what has happened to AMERICA in just 2 1/2 short years. we were ready to revolt (at the ballot box), over speculators pushing gas prices to $4 a gallon, and yet now sit idly by paying $3.50. look at twitter and facebook. people in kansas are reporting nearly quadruple jumps in their utility cost between june and july. 1 woman's bill went from $128 to $560.
this comes on the heels of a july 7 rule change by the EPA which amounts to the government fining utility providers beginning january1, 2012 if they can not meet newer stricter standards
for pollution reduction. those cost will of course be borne by the consumers.

speaking of the rise in prices, have you gone to the grocery store recently? nearly every item we buy is a dollar or more higher than it was 8 months ago. while on vacation, i spoke to a canadian couple at the grocery store. they were putting milk and chicken into coolers in the trunk of their car. looking about i noticed several cars with canadian tags on them. i asked why they were buying these items to take home. they informed me that they buy their milk by the liter in canada, still. the cost is over $8 canadian, which for a gallon, you would pay $8.16 AMERICAN. what is your current cost-$3.25-$3.75? what will it be as we continue down our current track? they also had 4 or 5 packages of chicken, looked to be wings mostly, which are cheap. they told me the entire cost of the yard bird was under $20 our money but would be over $40 across the river. they told me they do most of their shopping on our side of the bridge.
makes you wonder how many other canadians are doing this, and what border states economies would look like if the flow of money stopped, from the true north.

did anyone else notice mr. obama whining about the taxes that were not coming into the sweaty hands of the government this week from the airline companies? these taxes were enacted to help subsidize air service to smaller airports, all of which came out of the carter(obama1) administration. it is figured the government lost $200 million dollars, in the first week of the tax not being collected, which is the cost of the entire subsidy program. what does the government do with the rest of the money? only GOD knows.

did you also pay attention to how he bemoaned the furloughing of 4,000 airport workers due to this? did anyone hear him squawk about the 10,000 good paying NASA jobs he just shit canned?

speaking of jobs going away how about HSBC selling 195 branches under a restructuring move to first niagara, which, due to federal regulations and overlap, intends to close about 100 of those branches. this is fall out from the subprime lending scandal orchastrtaed by chris dodd and barney frank. on top of that, fannie mae is now asking the government to take from me and you an additional $2.8 to $5.1 billion dollars to cover their losses. where the fuck we supposed to get that mr. president????

so as not to panic investors anymore than they already have, i'm sure the administration asked standard and poor's to hold off on announcing the down grade of U.S. debt, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, until after 5p.m. pacific time.

and then we get to deal with the "greater civility" democrats calling us hostage takers and terrorists. self fulfilling prophecy mr. biden, kerry , pelosi, et.al., just like your 90% guns in mexico come from the states? also, what happened to the fairness doctrine mr. kerry?

most of the country is currently locked in the grips of a heat wave. thankfully we are an advanced nation and most have access to air conditioners, even if many are window units. still, according to AL-REUTERS, 22 deaths have already occurred nationwide this summer due to high temperatures. 25 persons were treated for heat related illness in wichita, while 16 have been seen in des monies.

and on the heels of this comes some really good news from the EPA as reported by dion lefler for the WICHITA EAGLE;

Westar Energy’s top air-quality official says it will be impossible for the state’s dominant electric company to comply with new federal pollution regulations taking effect at the beginning of next year.

“As far as we’re concerned, there’s no way we can comply with this rule on Jan. 1,” said Bill Eastman, director of air programs for Westar. “It’s too soon and it’s too quick. . . It literally appears right now impossible.”

Eastman and other Westar officials reached that conclusion after analyzing the impact of the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule announced July 7 by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Complying with emission rules is already going to cost Westar customers $1.5æbillion. The rule changes could add to that if Westar has to buy pollution credits or pay fines.

The new rules, more than 1,300 pages in length, cover power plants in 27 states in the eastern half of the country.

They are designed to reduce pollution that drifts across state borders and makes it difficult to impossible for downwind cities to meet air quality standards.

Westar will have to reduce emissions of two smog- and soot-producing pollutants by more than 10,000 tons a year.

The company already has a sweeping plan for emission reduction.

“We believe that in 2015, we can meet the requirements,” Eastman said.

From 2012 until the plants are in compliance, Westar could have to purchase pollution “credits” from other power plants or pay millions of dollars in fines to the EPA.

The exact effect on customers’ bills is not yet known, but it is expected to be substantial.

Ordinarily, the company can’t pass fines through to customers, said David Springe, chief consumer counsel for the Citizens’ Utility Ratepayer Board.

But state regulators might allow that if Westar could prove it was impossible to avoid the penalty, he said.

EPA: Health at risk

The regulations cover two major pollutants, sulfur dioxide, which is abbreviated SO2, and nitrogen oxide, or NOX.

SO2 and NOX both contribute to formation of particulate soot in the atmosphere, while NOX also contributes to ozone smog.

The EPA estimates that the new rules will prevent as many as 34,000 premature deaths, along with substantially reducing heart attacks, acute bronchitis, aggravated asthma and other breathing problems.

Agency officials who could explain why utilities are given only six months to comply with the new rules — which can involve hundreds of millions of dollars in power plant refitting — were not available for comment Tuesday.

David Bryan, a spokesman for the EPA’s Region 7 office in Kansas City, Kan., said the agency’s position is “that all the sources (of pollution) will be able to meet deadlines.”

“The final rule does give each source the flexibility to choose how they will comply,” he said. “They can run existing (emission) controls or those expected to come on line in the future. They can make changes in the way electricity is distributed across their facility. They can buy allowances, among other things.”

Reductions mandatory

Under the new rules, Kansas power plants are given a pollution allowance of 40,697 tons of SO2. In 2010, they produced 45,251 tons.

The state produced 48,938 tons of NOX last year.

The new rules will require a reduction to 30,100 tons of NOX next year and to 25,049 tons by 2014, said Tom Gross, chief of monitoring and planning for the Bureau of Air at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The EPA considers Kansas a “contributor state” for pollution, and its modeling maps show emissions from here contributing to air quality problems as far away as Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Kansas isn’t listed as a “receptor state” for pollution, although air-quality monitoring clearly shows that the state does receive pollution from Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.

Gross said Kansas doesn’t qualify as a receptor because it had no areas out of compliance with federal air quality standards when the rules were initially drafted.

He said he expects that to change in the future as the rules are updated to reflect more recent — and tougher — clean-air standards.

Clean air, big money

Kansas utilities have already reduced emissions substantially.

In the past five years, they’ve cut SO2 emissions by more than 91,000 tons a year and NOX by nearly 40,000 tons, according to federal records.

The biggest reduction came from pollution control measures at Westar’s biggest coal-fired power plant, the Jeffrey Energy Center near St. Mary’s.

That plant reduced emissions from 69,000 tons of SO2 in 2005 to 1,200 tons in 2010; and NOX emissions from about 32,000 tons to 18,000.

The current estimated cost for reducing emissions at the company’s three coal plants is:

„ $650æmillion for Westar’s share of the LaCygne Energy Center, which the company shares with Kansas City Power and Light.

„ $450æmillion for the Jeffrey Energy Center.

„ $380æmillion for the Lawrence Energy Center.

According to company records, Westar now produces 19,045 tons of SO2 and 30,802 tons of NOX a year.

Its new limit will be 18,932 tons of SO2 and 20,549 tons of NOX by 2012.

By 2014, the company will have to further reduce its NOX emissions to 17,105 tons a year.

“We’re very concerned about the rule, and extremely concerned about the timeline,” Eastman said.

last night as the wife and i put the kids to bed and waited for our show to come on hbo at 10:00, i was flipping through the channels and turned on fox. geraldo was talking about some big national security announcement. he and his guests were throwing around possibilities....gadhafi, all manner of things.

the wife correctly guessed that bin laden was dead BEFORE geraldo did (she is such a genius. that is one of the many reasons i love her). obama was supposed to speak between 9:30 and 9:45 our time. that turned into 10:00 and us watching game of thrones instead. i periodically checked back to see if he had shown up on the tube yet, and he didn't show until around 10:15.

i wondered what could take him such a long time to address the nation. what was the hold-up? after the press conference was over, all became clear. he had to wait for his rent-a-mob to show up in front of the white house, complete with obama/biden campaign signs. i'm sure the call went out over twitter and facebook to all the hippie dippies that follow him on the social network sites. that is why we saw all the people that would normally be at a war protest rally. it was mostly young, white college students with their GW t-shirts on.

am i sad that bin laden is dead? no. am i smart enough to know this isn't anywhere near the end of our fight against radical islam? yes. what bothers me about the whole thing is that the guy who is turning our country into a third world economy is now also turning us into a third world society. he won't speak unless the hordes are there to praise him.

A patient who apparently ingested rodent poison and is emitting potentially harmful gasses has created a hazardous material situation at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

The man is isolated in his room in the medical intensive care unit on the hospital’s sixth floor, 5301 McAuley at East Huron River Drive, hospital spokeswoman Lauren Jones said this afternoon.

“The hospital is open and the situation is isolated,” she said, adding that she was unable to discuss the man’s condition or other specifics due to patient privacy laws. Traffic in that area is restricted to staff involved in direct patient care and Washtenaw County Hazardous Material Team workers, according to the hospital.

Joyce Williams, public affairs manager for Huron Valley Ambulance, said rescuers transported the man to the hospital either late Saturday night or early Sunday. But the hazmat team was called between 10:30 and 11 a.m. today when the man’s body began creating suspicious emissions, she said.

“They were doing air purity testing,” she said, adding that no further information was available.

The hospital issued a statement at about 2:30 p.m. today, dispelling rumors that the gas was potentially flammable.

“Hazmat teams … here are monitoring the levels of gas in the room; the levels are not at explosive or flammable levels,” Jones sent out in an e-mail. “The air has been tested and confirmed for low levels. Hazmat teams are continuing to monitor the levels to ensure maintaining a safe environment; the level of gas in the room is only expected to improve.”

question. why don't we have a hazmat team following obama everywhere and isolating him, as every time he opens his mouth, he spouts bullshit and flammable rhetoric.

so previously we talked about food, water, shelter and heat. the ready.gov site talks about special items, like medicine and legal documents, but totally omits something to help you keep all your shit all yours......a gun.

there was a story out of japan and the recent catastrophe there, of a guy who walked into a store and was going to buy the last 10 bottles of water on the shelf. realizing if he did that there would be no more for anyone else, he put 8 back. that shit would not happen in LA, NYC, DETROIT or a whole lot of other places here. look at NEW ORLEANS and katrina and the looting associated with that.

that is a lot of heineken or becks, we even have one in the back pocket. should have stolen some chest waders to keep the feet dry while out liberating the high end brews, or at least some foot powder to keep the dogs from chaffing.

looks like these guys went to the car dealer first, beer store second. got a new lincoln, but had to settle for the miller lite as the first guy got all the heinies.

can't blame them here. the power is out so it's hard to wash clothes. we'll just steal clean stuff.

right idea, wrong execution. if i put up any sign it would read something like NOTHING HERE IS WORTH YOUR LIFE. that way if order is restored, and someone dies of lead poisoning while trying to relocate my shit, the prosecutor will have a harder time saying what i did was premeditated.

of course i could have it all wrong about our big cities. looks like water and food will be safe, beer and threads are up for grabs.

i still think you will need a means of holding onto your shit, which means a threat of force, and the WILLINGNESS TO CARRY IT OUT. ball bats and golf clubs are contact weapons, and decisively lose to guns on a regular basis.

what kind of gun should i get? if i had a dollar for every time someone asked me that i could retire. the answer is what do you want to do with it, and how much experience do you have with firearms? just home protection, probably a shotgun. personal protection, probably a handgun. i think for our little scenario here a revolver in .357 as well as a lever action carbine in the same caliber would be ideal. that's if you have no guns currently. a .22 semi auto rifle and a 9mm will serve you fine if that is what you presently have.

some will say why a revolver and lever action carbine? because they are simple to use and maintain and use the same ammunition. additionally, you can use .38 special ammo in both. the carbine will take down deer at less than 100 yards, which means fresh meat in a true survival situation.

assuming you have to take to the hills, you will need a good pack, good boots, a knife or 2 (they don't have to be huge), some canteens, tent or other shelter items, blankets or poncho liners, light and batts, food and ammo, a way to make fire, plus a compass and map, and a hatchet and camp saw. a length of good rope (not clothes line) will come in handy, also.

sounds like a lot, but you can carry it all given the right pack and motivation. get a holster for the handgun and sling for the carbine. use wool socks and blankets as they continue to insulate even when wet. look for items that can perform more than 1 function like a hatchet (split-cut wood/drive nails). a leatherman tool is a great bit of kit and can go in a pocket or on the belt.

there are lots of great sights to browse for gear ideas and reviews, and you can always go camping to try out your new acquisitions. sound paranoid? well consider this. the mormon church is again gearing up their disaster preparedness plans. if you could ask the folks in japan if they wished they had put away some stuff to get them through, i bet all would say yes.

i watched with some amusement this week as these practitioners of the religion of pieces held fireside chats to discuss their feelings over a quran burning in florida this past march 20th.

that is supposed to be the vacationer in chief they are burning in effigy. looks more like papa smurf to me, but what the fuck, i wasn't that great at art either.

yeah, terry jones went ahead and burned a quran. if you remember back in september, he was going to do the same thing and got talked out of it by the prez, the countess of cankles-hillary, some religious leaders, and sec def bobby gates. seems at that time the gainesville city attorney was soooo upset that he started implementation of a process which would have made it illegal to burn the quran outside. so jones burned it indoors on the 20th, and sent the very reasonable and intellectual denizens of jalalabad, kandahar and mazar-i-sharif into a frenzy of peace and love, resulting in the death of 2 afghan cops and 7 U.N. workers.

the taliban has issued a statement saying, "that the U.S. and other Western countries had wrongly excused the burning of the Quran as freedom of speech and that Afghans cannot accept this un-Islamic act." now who fucking knew the taliban had a PR department?

if you ever wondered why folks act like they are tiptoeing around a mine field when dealing with these highly religious and totally peaceful clowns, it's due to shit like this. here in the states, you can; A) burn the flag, B) spit on veterans, C) call them baby killers (think murtha, kerry kennedy), D) get money from the national endowment for the arts to paint pictures of jesus in shit or throw a crucifix in piss, E) make movies about killing presidents you disagree with, and that's all okay.

so terry jones' probably well intentioned but poorly executed message is getting vilified in the lame stream media. how come no one ever criticizes the actions of the islamic faithful? why do we in the west excuse the "honor killings" that happen when a muslims sister or wife gets raped? why do we ignore the sexual mutilation of muslim girls? turn a blind eye to be-headings of westerners captured by al qaeda and their associates?

because they, the media, are pussies. and by extension so are we, because we allow them to form our opinions for us. it's time to stop and think for ourselves and stop letting our leaders, and their paid mouth pieces, cater to bullies. face it, jones is right. islam, as practiced by these assholes, is evil.

this evening thru tomorrow are national autism awareness day. they say 1 in every 110 kids has some form of autism. is it the environment or the preservatives in all the inoculations the kids have to take that is causing this? who knows. whatever the cause know that those afflicted can and do function in society. my buddy's daughter is pretty severe, and my own daughter has a form, but thankfully is doing just fine, in large parts due to the excellent work of the professionals at our local school.

with numbers this high, it benefits us all to donate to help find the cause and treatment, and hopefully a cure for this malady.

in part 2 i talked about the food and water you would need to survive 3 days after a disaster occurs. now it is time to discuss shelter and heat.

imagination is a helpful ally in this endeavor. if you are staying home, and the home is not damaged, you are in good shape. but what if you are on the road or forced to take to the hills when calamity strikes? do you have ponchos or 2 shelter halves to make a tent with? do you have a bivvy sack, sleeping mats and bags? do you have a hatchet to help you build a lean to or debris shelter? remember, if things really go to shit, others will have taken to the hills also, and will be looking for obvious shelter too, such as YOUR home. how will you defend it and your food and water stores?

do you own a firearm? now, do you actually know how to use it? how much ammunition do you have? there is no such thing as too much ammo, you can always use it in trade for something you need, like eggs or vegetables. more on the proper selection, care and feeding of your firearms later.

what sort of furnace do you have? natural gas, electric, propane or home heating oil? most have electric ignition, so what to do when the power goes out? some folks have natural gas powered generators. these are attached directly to your home natural gas line, and kick in when the power goes out automatically i understand. perhaps you own a gas powered generator. do you know how many gallons it burns over a 24 hour period? are you smart enough to keep it outside your home while it runs? how often do you have to change the oil? how much gas do you have on hand? do you have a back up plan such as a catalytic heater for heat and maybe a coleman stove for food preparation?

if you must go live of the land, can you make fire? don't laugh, when the zippo shits the bed, a flint and steel will work, but do YOU have one? how many of you could make fire given a 9 volt battery and steel wool? how many of you know you can do that? do you have a single burner propane stove and propane to go with it? they are very handy but bulky, 3 bottles would take up a significant amount of space in your pack. i just found a wood-gas camp stove that costs less than a hundred bucks (tax not included). they use sticks, leaves and pine needles, which unless i'm atop everest or in the gobi are not in short supply. next we need something to heat our water or cook our vittles in, as plastic and fire don't mix. go light, buy a g.i. canteen with it's aluminum cup and holder. better yet buy 3, as the canteens only hold a quart of water each, which is less than the gallon of water you need a day.

so what are we preparing for? most likely some type of poor weather event. our friends in the northeast know all about that these last 2 winters. perhaps you live on the gulf or southeast coast, and hurricanes cause heartburn where you live. maybe you live in tornado alley, where whole towns can be removed from the map in minutes. so what would you need to survive, and the local state and federal governments couldn't or maybe wouldn't help you.

the experts debate what comes first, but the basics are shelter, water and food, then depending on the environment, heat. no matter what sooner or later you WILL need a fire. the ready. gov site i mentioned says, and i agree, every person in your care will need at least a gallon of clean water per day, more in hot and humid climates. so do you have a water purifier or do you know how and have the gear necessary to distill water? staying at home? distillation is the way to go, as the fire you will use to heat the water can dry wet clothing and warm you while you cook.

food-3 days of preserved food, per person, per day, minimum. for most of us that means canned goods, but how do you intend to open them with no electricity to run the can opener? do you have a hand crank can opener? ever heard of a p51 can opener? we used to wear them on our dog tags, even though we never had c ration cans. by the time i joined the army, we were eating MRE's , AKA, shit in a bag. the beef and pork patties really did look like turds.
if you are walking to salvation after civilization goes to shit, you will find it much easier to carry the new improved MRE's or the equivalent in the civilian sector of dehydrated/ freeze dried food offered by companies like MOUNTAIN HOUSE and BACKPACKER'S PANTRY. there's a reason the military went to MRE's and one of them was the weight of the food the troops had to carry. i suggest a mixture of both types of food in your kit, and something to heat it with.

i originally intended to post this in september, but life got in the way. with the natural disaster and nuclear catastrophe in japan, and tornado time upon us, seems like a good time, to put it out for general consumption.

show of hands, who knew september was NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH? i didn't until i heard a radio interview with some government wonk LIVE from our state fair. a bit of research turned up this site, ready.gov. more on that a bit later.

i'm not certain whether it is coincidence or planned that National Preparedness Month falls in september because of 9/11, but that, coupled with a statement made by my friend THE CAMBRIDGE LADY over at JUST WAFFLING, as well as a book and movie got me to thinking.
the book was recommended to me by best bud SKI over at GLOBAL DOMINATION. the book is THE LAST CENTURION, and is about an army officer who single handed fights his abandoned company back to the states from the middle east, after the world population is decimated by bird flu and another ice age. once home, our hero helps reorganize survivors, gets farms working again, and destroys some city/state caliphates. yeah, i know it's a reach to think 1 guy could do all of that, but the author mixes a couple of dooms day scenarios together pretty well in showing how our society could unravel, and what the government may do in extreme circumstances.

the movie, ( i read the book after watching, i was so intrigued) was THE ROAD. for those who have not watched or read it, it is about a father and son trying to survive after we apparently nuke ourselves into nuclear winter. the wife said it was depressing but i think that was due to dad constantly putting a gun to the kids head if danger approached to keep the child from being captured, raped, killed and eaten by the lawless cannibals roaming the desolate land. the mother, weak of spirit, had already abandoned them by committing suicide. the story is really about perseverance in the face of incredible adversity, hope and love. the man loves his son so much he shields him from the mothers desire to kill the boy and herself. so much that he will kill the boy rather than let the monsters that humans have become defile him. his hope is to find somewhere warm for them to live, so that the boy may survive, and the father ends up dying in the process.

i wasn't so caught up in the story line, good as it was, but found myself asking if the man was doing the right thing in the situations presented to him. how would i handle something similar? AM I READY?

turning AMERICA into a paper tiger part 1

it's in the news almost daily. someone attacks AMERICAN interests either here or abroad and the administration does nothing about it. 2 airmen were killed and 2 wounded at frankfort airport last week by what the shooter's family describes as a "devout" muslim and the president's spokesman can't bring himself to call it terrorism.

a jet skier gunned down by mexican "pirates" on a texas lake, not terrorism. 1 ICE agent killed, his partner wounded in san luis potosi, mexico, no terrorist at work there. a border patrol agent killed in arizona by a mexican gang suspected of robbing mexican drug smugglers, of course these two groups have nothing to do with terrorism.

the word terrorism has french origins derived from latin-terroisme -great fear or dread. it showed up in the english language in 1798 and is defined as the systematic use of terror as a policy.

anyone who doesn't think that the mexican drug cartels operating along and inside of our borders are a terrorist organization, should be working for the obama white house. david hartley was killed on falcon lake, texas on september 30 2010. the lead mexican investigator on the case was beheaded. other incidents of piracy on the same lake were reportedly carried out by ZETA members, a drug cartel made up of former mexican special forces troops, identified by victims because of their distinctive tattoos.

i first wrote about the ZETAS back in march of 2009 over on good buddy SKI's GLOBAL DOMINATION site. we, the UNITED STATES, or rather our government, initially trained and equipped these guys. they were supposed to fight the narco-terrorist, but instead joined up, or more correctly eliminated much of their competition and started cashing in. most of the homicides in the border towns of tijuana, nuevo laredo and juarez can be attributed to the work of the ZETAS and the cartels they work for/against. the mexican government estimated that the death toll nation wide between 2006 and now is estimated at 35,000.

so what does that mean to us? how does it affect those of us who don't live along the border? how can i say that it is turning us into a paper tiger? read part 2 to find out.

the return of the WWI fighter ace

so i got a new game i've been playing. those of you who are gamers know it's an old title, but it is new to me, and i really enjoy it. BLAZING ANGELS-SQUADRONS OF WWII is a first person shooter game which allows you to" fly" lots of different aircraft from the war, in air to air combat, and ground attack/bombing missions.

i grew up reading as much as i could about the aces like GABBY GABRESKI, CHUCK YEAGER, BUD ANDERSON, RICHARD BONG, PAPPY BOYINGTON and JOE FOSS. i also read about the german aces, like RUDI GALLAND and GUNTHER RAHL. the stories they tell are fascinating, funny and frightening. if you get a chance pick up one of these guys books and prepare to be wowed.

i got to meet an ace who lives here locally, HORST PETZSCHLER. the old gent came into where i work one day, and we struck up a conversation over his accent. he was somewhat reluctant to talk about his past until i told him about my german jump wings. i found out that he was a german ace with 26 victories to his credit, who had to survive 4 years of soviet captivity, before he was able to emigrate to canada and then the STATES. he's a really neat guy and he even gave me an autographed photo.

HORST used to be a fixture at the local gun shows with lots of folks gathered around asking questions and having autographs signed. i understand he is in very poor health now so he can't come out any longer. it's very sad when you think about all the veterans on both sides we are losing daily. so much history.

i really like the old warbirds and attend airshows as time allows. of course the kids like to go which right now makes for long hot days. can't wait 'til they're a little older. the last time we went the youngest fell asleep as the thunderbirds were preforming.

in another life, i thought about staying in the army when the military was kicking around the idea of transferring the A-10 from the air force to the army. probably a good thing for me that idea fell through.

for now i'll have to content myself turnin' and burnin' in the recliner as the kids cheer me on.

i see that one of the arizona shooting victims has gone off the deep end. after photographing tea party leader, trent humphries, james fuller told him "you're dead", and was taken into custody. according to pima county sheriff spokesman jason ogan, fuller will undergo a psych eval and faces misdemeanor charges for threats and disorderly conduct. fuller was pissed over humphries stance on gun control.

a couple of things here; who knew that the pima county sheriff department had a spokesman? after a week of nothing but clarence dupnik all day, everyday, i honestly felt he was handling this duty all by himself. i mean the guy psychoanalyzed every conservative and tea party member, solved the shooting, uncovered sarah palin's and sharron angle's complicity , and told AMERICA how we need to play nice, or else. why from just seeing clarence on the tube, i got the impression that he was a true one man band, the very glue holding arizona's pima county together.

i'm not saying that james fuller, who was shot in the leg and back has no reason to be pissed, but someone tell me why he is mad at trent humphries. whoever trent is, he is not jared loughner.
trent isn't the guy with the glock who shot rep. giffords, or who had made threats to other members of the community, that do not appear to have been investigated. trent is not the one who failed to inform the fbi of loughners mental instability, which might have stopped him from getting the gun, during the background check.

why only the misdemeanor? did anyone look into fullers ability to carry out the threat? does he have the ability to carry it out? does he have firearms? if so, is he prohibited from having them, due to mental deficiencies or criminal history?

i think most of the answers lead back to the same place. dumbass dupnik and his incompetence.
remember, it was dupnik who said that arizona had become a "mecca for hatred and bigotry".
time for a bit of self reflection sheriff. looks like your vitriol has found a home in the head of a potentially unbalanced person. hopefully trent humphries, or some other innocent tea party member, won't pay for it with their life.

the death of a great soldier

late today it was revealed the Major Dick Winters has died. AMERICA was introduced to him by the hbo miniseries Band of Brothers. those of you who did not see it, should check it out, or read it or his memoirs Beyond Band of Brothers.

Winters was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, and Parachutist Badge with 2 gold stars, signifying his jumps into normandy and holland.

the above picture is a painting by artist john shaw in which Winters tells his troopers to HANG TOUGH during the Battle of the Bulge. i have often found his and their example to be inspiring and uplifting. the world is a smaller place with his passing. CURRAHEE sir, and GOD speed.

my best buddy SKI, from the FIRST GULF WAR.

the WAR ON TERROR; BARRY (who is at officer basic school), DEWAYNE, MARK, and a host of new guys i'm ashamed to admit i only know by last name, which i will not print here. MARK, a kid i attended school with, killed when his bradley hit an IED.

and most recently a young man who's sense of commitment was so strong, he re-upped to go with his team to afghanistan, and has now lost his legs, JONATHAN BLANK. i'm proud to know his mother.

these two soldiers and marine are all from the wichita, kansas area.

SGT. JUSTIN OFFICER of the 101st Airborne Division died 29 september 2010 in afghanistan from wounds received during an IED attack.

SPC. THOMAS MOFFITT of the 101st Airborne Division died 24 october 2010 in afghanistan from wounds received when his unit was engaged by insurgents employing small arms and RPGs.

MARINE SGT. JONATHAN BLANK was critically wounded on 26 october 2010 in afghanistan which resulted in the loss of both legs. JONATHAN was en route back to the states, but his condition has deteriorated and he is currently in a hospital in the U.K. until he improves.

show of hands, who knew september was NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH? i didn't until i heard a radio interview with some government wonk from our state fair. a bit of research turned up this site, ready.gov. more on that a bit later.

i'm not certain whether it is coincidence or planned that National Preparedness Month falls in september because of 9/11, but that coupled with a statement made by my friend THE CAMBRIDGE LADY over at JUST WAFFLING as well as a book and movie got me to thinking.
the book was recommended to me by best bud SKI over at GLOBAL DOMINATION. the book is THE LAST CENTURION, and is about an army officer who single handed fights his abandoned company back to the states from the middle east, after the world population is decimated by bird flu and another ice age. once home, our hero helps reorganize survivors, gets farms working again, and destroys some city/state caliphates. yeah, i know it's a reach to think 1 guy could do all of that, but the author mixes a couple of dooms day scenarios together pretty well in showing how our society could unravel, and what the government may do in extreme circumstances.

the movie, ( i read the book after watching, i was so intrigued) was THE ROAD. for those who have not watched or read it, it is about a father and son trying to survive after we apparently nuke ourselves into nuclear winter. the wife said it was depressing but i think that was due to dad constantly putting a gun to the kids head if danger approached to keep the child from being captured, raped, killed and eaten by the lawless cannibals roaming the desolate land. the mother, weak of spirit, had already abandoned them by committing suicide. the story is really about perseverance in the face of incredible adversity, hope and love. the man loves his son so much he shields him from the mothers desire to kill the boy and herself. so much that he will kill the boy rather than let the monsters that humans have become defile him. his hope is to find somewhere warm for them to live, so that the boy may survive, and the father ends up dying in the process.

i wasn't so caught up in the story line, good as it was, but found myself asking if the man was doing the right thing in the situations presented to him. how would i handle something similar? AM I READY?

we all remember where we were and how we heard about the attacks on the world trade centers and pentagon. our shock, anger, disbelief and horror. but we also need to remember our pride.

i think about the firemen and police who rushed in as others ran out. the ordinary citizens who helped one another to safety. the priest killed by a jumper from the towers as he comforted the injured and administered the last rights to the dead. and the travelers of FLIGHT 93, who surmised their preplanned fate at the hands of the hijackers, and fought back.

they embodied the spirit of AMERICA, and from them, through their actions,we can draw strength. it was the minute men of 1776 that gave us the tradition of citizens defending our REPUBLIC, and so it was on 9-11.

what is our responsibility going forward? to remember their sacrifice. to tell our children that it was practitioners of the" religion of peace", that carried out these attacks. members of the same religion who the U.S. supplied and trained to fight soviet aggression in afghanistan. who we defended from saddam husseins attack on kuwait and feared attack on saudi arabia. the same members of the" religion of peace", we defended from ethnic cleansing in bosnia.

teach your kids that as a result of failing to respond to the attack on the USS Cole, the embassy bombings in kenya and tanzania, and the first world trade center attack, we led our enemies to believe we were weak, further emboldening them.

tell them that these men and women believed an age old saying about AMERICANS and what AMERICA stands for, that we would rather DIE ON OUR FEET THAN LIVE ON OUR KNEES. last and certainly not least, remember those still deployed and our veterans. they continue to take the fight to the enemy, and have kept us free from attack since 9-11.

i had the sincere displeasure years ago of attending a multi-day event featuring the reverand JESSE JACKSON. for several days of my life, which i will never get back, i had to listen as JESS told the kids about FIGHT THE KLAN! and other bullshit. i say that because year in and year out, black on black crime kills more blacks than the klan did. ever. that is not a statement in support of the klan, just a fact. look it up.

he had other messages too, like apply and believe in yourself, to wit; if my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it , i know i can achieve it. another was, band together to form business partnerships; unity in the community with economic opportunity. that one really stuck in my head.

seemed a little radical. he seemed to be saying, start your business in black neighborhoods, employ blacks, and have black customers. not a big problem, unless one stops to think about affirmative action and equal employment opportunity laws. whatever, we all know JESS is a lightning rod, and who can disagree with the dream it, do it message. nothing wrong with finding inspiration and working toward your goals.

so today as i looked through the DETROIT FREE PRESS, i saw a little story about JESS'S ride getting swiped in MOTOWN, while he was on a 2 week bus tour of the state, shilling for green energy. nothing against green energy either, i would love to invest in WIND FARMS. but i find it ironic how the LIBS want this shit, just not in their backyards, i.e., the KENNEDY"S opposition to wind farms around CAPE COD.

in addition to being bemused about the theft of his escalade, and the attention said pilfering received, JACKSON was pissed about mayor DAVE BING'S idea to raze vacant structures and turn city lots into urban farms. JJ said that this would displace residents and also stated that,“There needs to be security, stability and reconstruction. Everything that has been done in Baghdad could be done here."

So, the same folks who have been yelping that a mosque near Ground Zero in New York would be insensitive to the families of 9/11 victims are rallying on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

King’s speech was delivered during the long and ugly fight for civil rights in America. People died during that struggle; people were beaten, shot, abused and forced to endure serious attacks on their personal dignity. I can imagine that the people who suffered through all that brutality, many of whom are still alive today, aren’t too happy to see the anniversary one of the major events in their struggle politicized by cable TV shills Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and others for political purposes during an election year. Never mind that the views being expressed at the rally run contrary to much of what Dr. King stood for. That states’ rights are being trumpeted on the anniversary of King’s famous speech is pathetically ironic.

You’d think people who spend so much time lecturing others about sensitivity would understand why their anniversary rally is wrong.

even the brady campaign believes in, peace through superior firepower

remember where you were on 31 march 1981? i do. i had been ice fishing with my still lifelong friend steve. we were walking home when good buddy dan came up the street and told us President Reagan had been shot. along with the President, 3 others were shot, including his press secretary jim brady.

things which i remember about the shooting include, that brady was reported killed and alexander haig claimed he was "in charge". haig was the secretary of state at the time, and had apparently forgot the vice president george h.w. bush would be "in charge" if the president could not carry on.

well, brady in fact survived, and went on to help found the brady campaign to prevent handgun violence, and had a law named in his honor, the brady handgun violence protection act, on 30 november 1993.

before i go further, let me say i feel sorry for the brady family. jim brady nearly died as a result of his injury and has been confined to a wheelchair since. that being said, i think that the legislation enacted in his honor is a steaming pile of shit. why do i say that? because it did the exact same thing as the gun control act of 1968, but added the requirement of a background check, by local and state authorities. this requirement was found to be unconstitutional and in violation of the 10th amendment by the supreme court, in 1997. three years after its implementation, by a congress and president sworn to uphold and defend the constitution.

ever notice how all the gun grabbing legislation is passed by democrat presidents? johnson in 68 and clinton in 93.

that brings us up to speed on festivities planned in NYC for today, 25 august 2010. seems the brady campaign to prevent gun violence is planning a "TSUNAMI OF PEACE, WALK, RUN, AND RALLY AGAINST VIOLENCE". this is in response to "a rise in gun violence, this summer in NYC." question? how the fuck is this even possible in a city that virtually bans handgun possession by average citizens, outside of home or work? funeral processions will be staged in the 5 boroughs of the the city and they will converge on city hall park for a peaceful rally. notable attendees are to include russell simons, michael strahan, the nyc/bronx million mom march chapter, as well as rappers MAINO and FAT JOE.

i find it ironic that MAINO and FAT JOE were included in this peaceful rally to end gun violence based on some of their works. how does MAINO's GETAWAY DRIVER fit in with the brady philosophy? check out some of the lyrics:

back in april of 09, prior to having my own blog, i wrote about the capture of the maersk alabama by somali pirates. good buddy ski, over at global domination was kind enough to post it for me.

since then many other ships have been attacked, including 2 navy vessels, the USS ASHLAND and the USS NICHOLAS, both of which occurred in april of 10. the crews of these vessels had been on patrol off the east coast of africa, due to pirate activity, and were able to capture 11 somalis, which unfortunately were returned to the states to stand trial (at our expense).

18 months ago i opined that the problem was an act of war, and should be handled as such. the countess of cankle, secretary of state hillary clinton had a different opinion, saying that the acts of piracy were criminal. due to that, when the maersk alabama was seized, we sent an fbi negotiator, and a SEAL team, who eventually killed 3 of the 4. the countess formed her opinion on an 1820 ruling by the supreme court. i formed mine based on the fact that the UNITED STATES fought 2 wars against the barbary pirates 1801-1805, and again in 1815.

well, the news today proves that i am right again (something i've known all along). federal district court judge raymond jackson, today (8/17/10) threw out the charges of piracy that the government had leveled against the attackers of the ASHLAND. citing the 1820 supreme court decision judge jackson stated that, "The Government simply fails to cite one case in United States jurisprudence in which the defendant was criminally prosecuted for 'piracy in violation of the law of nations,' for conduct that fell short of robbery or seizure of a ship."

ok, so because they were shitty pirates with really poor eyesight, who fell asleep during the identify, friend or foe, portion of buccaneer school, they get a pass. makes sense to me. intent is not enough. we send the navy to that region due to pirate attacks, pirates attack a ship they believe is an unarmed merchant vessel, get their boat shot out from under them, captured, brought to the land of the golden PX, appointed attorneys at the expense of the taxpayers of the country who's naval vessel they attacked------and have the most serious charges against them thrown out , by a clinton appointed judge.

due to this ruling, the case against the attackers of the NICHOLAS is in jeopardy. oh, they still face a host of charges, but nothing which will keep them in prison for the rest of their lives if convicted.

so what have we got here? lots of money and effort spent by AMERICA to keep the seas free, at personal risk to our sailors and other service members, in an effort to catch "criminals" as defined by hillary, aided one could argue, in their criminal enterprise, by a judge appointed for life to the bench, by her husband bill the philanderer.

now, who does not think it would be better to handle things my way and hunt these bastards down, kill them and all who supply them with everything from toothpaste to tennis shoes, in furtherance of their evil ways?

okay, it's official. until further notice, the old girl is on my shit list. the other night we return home to half a rabbit convention on the side yard. 20 minutes later, i'm sure it would have been a full blown orgy.

normally, like during hunting season, i wouldn't mind, but i just busted my ass a couple weeks ago putting in the garden. that shit ain't easy, and i'm just starting to see the beans and corn come up nice. beets and carrots are looking good as well. the other day whilst depositing the hound in her kennel, i amble over to to examine the fruits o' my labor, and their sits peter, chewing on a bean plant. that and the fact that they put their nest in the damnedest places, like the middle of the front lawn, really pisses me off.

i sort of lost it, and began to chase the little shit, until it can find a way out of the yard. i promptly go in, find the slingshot, and begin practicing. no sweat, i leave the trusty harbinger of death where i can quickly employ it to maximum effect, and wait for fate to open opportunity's door.

depends on what your definition of no limits is, i guess. as i predicted, the wings didn't go very deep in the playoffs this year. san jose knocked the boys out on saturday 2-1, ending the 5 game series, and earning themselves a rest before facing their conference final opponent, chicago. i say go hawks.

many reasons can be listed for the wings early exit (they lasted longer than i felt they would), the primary would be injuries. this is a false claim however, as all the injured players participated in the second season. while they all may not have been up to snuff, they all skated and many played in the olympics. more on that later.

next, the dreaded travel schedule. detroit, located in the eastern time zone, plays in the western conference, and as a result travels probably more than any other nhl team. add to that the compressed season due to the olympics, and you have tired guys playing more frequently, and on the road a great deal of the time.

another reason, i think, is the physical as well as psychological make up of the team. most of the players are of smaller stature (average size on detroit's roster figures up at 72.22 inches and 199.18 lbs.), and almost half are european, who are known to play a less physical style of hockey than their north american counterparts.

compare this to san jose's stable average of 73.14 inches and 206.23lbs. big deal right, an inch taller and 7 pounds heavier. okay, maybe. except when those inches and pounds slamming you into the end boards for 60 minutes are guys like thornton, clowe, blake,murray, heatley, and marleau. only 4 guys by my count are euro's, which means a tight checking, physical brand of hockey. these figures do not include goalies.

while detroit may control the puck better, teams like san jose are willing and able to go through you to get it, and keep it. also, have you ever seen a team miss the net more than the wings?

my pet peeve about the entire season has been the olympics. detroit sent at least 8 players from their active roster to vancouver. many were coming off injuries or nursing them along. that combined with winning the cup in 7 games in '08, losing the cup in 7 in '09, and the factors already mentioned i feel helped chase the wings from the playoffs. helping make my point is pittsburgh, who just got run in 7 by montreal. that is who detroit played 2 years in a row in those 7 game cup finals.

what does the league get out of the olympics? advertising? exposure? i doubt it. the league should mandate that no team can send more than 4 players TOTAL to the olympics. but they're playing for their country. big deal. the owners are paying you to play and win for them. olympic games were supposed to be the best amateur's in the world playing against each other.
but that all changed when we sent the basketball "dream team" out to wipe the floor with the world.

i don't want to hear any crying about 'the russians did it', either. remember the miracle on ice?

so what do i think the wings need to do? 1) not blow megabucks on nick lidstrom for multiple years. if he will come back for about 5.5 to 6 mil a year, for 2 years, fine. if not, thanks for the memories. 2) let bertuzzi walk. in his 15 years in the league he has only broken the 50 point mark 6 times. in two stints with detroit, his point total is 48---------for the 2 seasons. that's points, not goals. see ya. 3) re-sign jason williams. he is a right hand shot and he can play the point. 4) lilja, lebda,draper and maltby can all go.5) keep miller, eaves, helm, meech and abdelkader.6) look to trade zetterberg, seriously. get somebody younger with a better back that will cost you less, and can score when the goaltender is actually in the net. maybe a guy like pavalski or byfuglien, with another player and pick thrown in.

a sad goodbye to a detroit icon

i'm no baseball fan. takes forever for a game to be played with nowhere near the action of hockey or football.

that being said, today is a sad day for anyone who grew up in michigan before or after 1960 and had a radio. it was in 1960 that the voice of the tigers went on the air and became the perhaps the most recognizable symbol of baseball in michigan for the next 42 years.

i used to listen to his broadcast while at grandma and grandpas house, and all the guys emulated his "that ball is loooong gone", while playing ball in our backyard. pine tree was first, somebody's glove was second, corner of the garden was third and the past the fence was a homer.

many years have passed since those backyard ballgames, but the memories are still alive of sitting in the front room with gramps and hearing ERNIE HARWELL give the call on bottom of the 8th, 2 outs, full count.........and here's the pitch.

this top picture is"the big mango", located in queensland, australia. we were supposed to guess the what and where. cambridge lady wondered how i got the where before the what. it's a trade secret.

the second one she gave extra clues to, namely that it was taken in oregon when she lived there and it appeared in a famous movie. i was thinking "the shining" all the way and a lady named denise confirmed it, and that the peak in the background was mt. hood, so i just had to come up with timberline lodge.

the list goes on with stories of illegals killing while drunk driving, raping, robbing, etc. this isn't to say that AMERICANS don't commit these same crimes, but no one is agitating to keep those dudes here, or staging protests to convey more civil rights rights on them.

in an effort to down play the seriousness of the situation, the media makes fun of it. on the tonight show jay leno yucked it up over a police chase which resulted in the van being chased, hitting a car and overturning. about 15 illegals jumped out and took off running. the driver of the car struck jumped out and tried to stop the van's driver, but due to poor conditioning, injury, or just being overwhelmed by the situation, quickly stopped. or maybe they were concerned about their safety or any passengers they had in their car.

hey jan, if you ever do pull your head out, get a decent haircut, okay? and try to secure us against the blatant incursion on the southern border. it's not funny, and people have every right to be scared.

so the wings finally play a complete game, and move on to the second round, after beating phoenix tonight. turn out the lights, the white out is over, the coyotes shit the bed, losing 6-1 at home.

in all fairness to the 'yotes, they gave the boys from hockeytown all they could want. in the end, they didn't turn dirty either, as many teams do, and were rightfully saluted by their fans. they had a very nice regular season, and great 7 game series, against the reigning western champs, and i'm certain this isn't the last we have heard from the dogs from the desert.

great job by coach tippet and the rest of the team, see you again next year. now it's on to san jose and those pesky sharks.

after an 82 game grind, not including the olympics, tonight we usher in hockey's playoffs. the regular season only matters in your wins for positioning and home ice advantage throughout the second season. legends will be made, character will be tested, and 16 will become 8, reduced to 4, then 2, and in the end there will only be 1.

i have my favorite team i'll be cheering on, but i wonder how deep we can go this year.

if the boys from HOCKEYTOWN can't get it done, i hope this guy can.

but i wonder about the depth of the caps, as we saw what happened to russia during the olympics when ovie got shut down. and although i hate to admit it, these guys have arrived and are going to cause serious problems.

i don't believe things just happen. there is a reason behind everything. a series of events which come together to create an incident. some of the events can be accidental, the result of carelessness or laziness, but i think most can be attributed to planning. once a plan is in place it can be altered, due to unforeseen events arising, but slight adjustments occur, and the plan remains in effect.

the army even has a "rule" for this called the 6 P's; Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

i think we, the conservative movement, have interrupted the lefts plans, and we are now seeing another military style acronym at work, before our very eyes. this would be the OODA LOOP; Observe Orient Decide Act.

the basic tenant of this is; see the problem, analyze the problem, plan to correct the problem, and take that action. the military believes that if you can get inside an opponents OODA LOOP, you can disrupt his planning/operation cycle, thus defeating him. i understand this is used in the business world also, under different names.

we, the conservatives of the the TEA PARTY, have stepped into the lefts OODA LOOP, and raised holy hell with their plans. health care reform was supposed to be passed last august. due to our opposition, it dragged out until the end of march. it was a tooth and nail fight that only succeeded because of bribes being paid to nebraska, louisianna and michigan.

obama, pelosi and reid can't tolerate anymore vocal, demonstrative dissent. they don't have the time. november mid-term elections are 7 months away, and WE don't have the money.

this brings us up to speed on current events, and the "resurgence" according to the media, of the extremist/patriot/militia movement. that would be all of Y- O- U.

for the last 6 months, i have begged copies of the southern poverty law centers info mag the intelligence report. this is a left wing organ i first became acquainted with years ago, during the clinton administration. the basic story line is something along the lines of 'evil white inbred fuck kills, maims, or otherwise terrorizes blacks', with an occasional hispanic or jew, (their descriptor), thrown in. most of the guys they write about belong to the klan, or are skinheads. here, i want to say that if people belonging to these groups commit bias or any other crimes, i have no problem seeing them get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

they also were strong opponents of the militia movement that cropped up during the clinton years. SPLC has for at least the last six months began to beat that drum pretty hard again. the fall 2009 issue was titled the second wave- the return of the militias.

this picture graced the cover, and the image it is trying to impart is clear. here comes the shadowy, masked, violent white men, again. ok. but in taking the time to read the articles, one finds that they attack; neal boortz , the oath keepers organization, michele bachmann, glenn beck, alan keyes, jerome corsi, rick perry, and the list goes on. basically, anyone in the media or politics, who is not ardently left wing, gets pounded.

beck, brian kilmeade, tom tanncredo and pat buchanan get some reverse loving in the winter 2009 issue. to be fair, the magazine finally recognized the death of army hometown recruiter WILLIAM LONG, which occurred on 1 june 2009. LONG was gunned down by carlos bledsoe, an AMERICAN convert to islam. the short, (10 paragraph) story is very even, which is odd based on other writings in the publication. there is also a piece on the freak show that is cynthia mckinney. it basically praises mckinney for trying to get GWB, dick cheney, and condie rice impeached. it goes on to tout her record on international human rights and the peace movement/opposition to the first gulf war. the writer does hold her responsible for her anti- semitic statements, but to a lesser degree than her current associates.

the spring 2010 issue is entitled rage on the right, and it attacks --you. in an article called 'fear of fema', and another called 'rage on the right', SPLC's writers re-focus their attacks on beck, bachmann, the oath keepers and the AMERICAN public, because 61 percent of those polled think AMERICA is in decline, and only 25 percent feel the government can be trusted. tea parties are mentioned as "(being) shot through with rich veins radical ideas, conspiracy theories and racism." they give no examples that i could find of racism, and i guess "radical ideas", means sticking to the principles the REPUBLIC was founded upon, namely the CONSTITUTION.

make no mistake, the attacks you are experiencing is push back for your resistance to health care seizure, i mean reform.

just like the Souls are singing about, we have become anesthetized to what is occurring in our communities and country. don't let societies ills touch me, give me a sense of freedom, and i'll be the dutiful drone. head off to work, pay the taxes, no matter how high, and not criticize the workings of the government. do what you will, as long as i have instant self gratification.

obie saying it's ok to explore, not drill, for oil now is sleight of hand. a 'see, i'm not a bad guy' moment. he knows we are pissed about the health care law being stuffed up our ass, sees the TEA PARTIES winding up still more opposition, and is looking for a way to placate us.

The Hutaree militia

Just over one year ago, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was under fire for a report issued by her agency that warned of the risk posed by right-wing extremist groups in America. The report was intended to "provide situational awareness to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies on the phenomenon and trends of violent radicalization in the United States" Napolitano explained in a press release

At the time, conservatives skewered Napolitano. Rush Limbaugh denounced the report as "a genuine hit job.”

Fast forward one year to March 2010 and the report looks more like a remarkably accurate prediction than a "hit job." The violent reaction to health care reform by right wing extremists and the arrest of the Hutaree militia are more than enough to vindicate Napolitano. It makes you shudder to think how bad things will be next year at this time.

smelly people at the Y, and other random thoughts

so i go to the Y pretty much everyday before work, and also on my days off. while no longer a physical specimen, i can still more than hold my own, which is important in my line of work.

i've been holding this in for some time now and can no longer contain myself. some of the fuckers down there need to reacquaint themselves with irish spring. while on the ARC trainer the other day a kid about 17 got on the one next to me. this joker smelled like an old cat box. then there is the old retired air force dude, i suspect is married to a korean, because he always stinks like kim-che. for those of you unfamiliar with that nasty dish, its main ingredient is rotting cabbage. i can smell that dumb shit from easily 15 feet. today, a 50ish woman came past, got on a stepper and nearly knocked me off mine. the B.O. was that bad.

people, i know we all come in to work up a sweat, but GOD DAMN!! would it hurt to wash your ass with a bit of regularity and mix in a little pit stick now and again? FUCK. we had a way with dealing with smelly bastards in the army and it involved a big scrub brush for cleaning truck tires. very effective at sending a message. i might have to go to the surplus store and buy a couple.

between bouts of gagging on various odors emitted from other members, i get to watch day time t.v. weekdays are shitty cause the women want to watch the view. today the fat women on the show were discussing the merits of being fat, if they really are, in fact fat?! WTF? the only one on the whole show who looks decent is elizabeth hasselbeck, and i'm not convinced she isn't bulimic. whatever, at least she is conservative.

sunday is another shitty t.v. day at the Y, as they had on face the nation. some dem- a- dork was on bitching about how republicans are fanning the flames of hate with/through the TEA PARTY MOVEMENT. hey shit for brains, what about code pink, cindy sheehan, the black panthers, SEIU, ACORN, the huffington post,the daily kos, etc? that's right AMERICA, if you disagree with the chosen one you are a racist fuck, and if you exercise your rights to freedom of assembly and speech, you are a group of racist fucks.

i also found out on msnbc of all places, that the washington post did a survey which revealed that nearly 60% of AMERICANS think even with the obie/pelosi/reid health care goat fuck things will only stay the same or get worse!! all that and a bag of chips, for the low, low price of $960 billion dollars. thank god the democrats are looking out for me.

the other night i heard bill o'reilly talking about the terrorist bombing in moscow, and wondering why the russians won't help us combat islamic terrorism. because asshole, during the first chechnya war, bill fucking clinton obstructed the shit out of the russians, who brutally tried to end a brutal rebellion, in their own fucking country. imagine the russians or anyone else telling us how to deal with our inner city gang problems, and lobbying the U.N. to sanction us for whatever action we took. then we expect them to help us? we are helping them by siphoning off fighters who would normally attack russian targets, by virtue of our 2 wars. they are in no hurry to intervene on our behalf, even as they stand to gain from a joint effort.

this morning, NPR had on some bleeding heart lib who bemoaned the fact that the russians are committing human rights violations in chechnya, and essentially blaming the russians for the moscow bombing. nice try dumb ass, ever heard of BESLAN? your poor, oppressed chechens slaughtered 334 men and women, including 186 elementary school age children, many of whom they raped and tortured.

oh, i know what i'm talking about too, as not only did i read JOHN GIDUCK'S book, TERROR AT BESLAN, i also paid to see his presentation on the incident. it included captured or found chechen "home movies" of chechen terrorist shooting off soldiers fingers, cutting off heads, slowly, of live captured russians. the list goes on, and it sure as fuck didn't leave me with any impression that the chechens are just some peaceful sheep farmers, wanting to tend their flocks and be left alone.

lastly, on the way home tonight, i heard some stories out of average britian. seems a women got reported to police because she helped a school kid out of a tree. i guess over there if junior shimmies up the oak, his ass stays and the teachers all retreat to the safety of the school to "observe" said deciduous acrobat. they wouldn't want to distract the lad apparently and cause him to fall. proving no good deed goes unpunished, the woman was reported to police for trespassing.

as if that wasn't dumb enough, a 66 year old woman was fined a 1000 pounds(?) put on curfew and has to wear a electronic tether for...........selling a gold fish to a 14 year old. seems our british cousins feel it is a crime to sell pets to anyone under 16 years of age. drugs, rampant violence in south london and the cops are focusing on illegal gold fish trafficking. i would say i'm glad to be an AMERICAN, but with the crew we got running shit in washington, i wonder how long it will be before i end up in the klink for helping a little old lady across the street.

so this weekend geraldo had jesse ventura, er, james janos on the show. me and 7 others watched. get off of me, there was literally nothing else on.

i liked jesse when i was a kid and he was wrestling. he had the image all 10 year old kids like- a loud mouth and big muscles to back it up. he also had a strange affinity for feather boas that i swear i don't possess.

well like i was saying, jesse had a loud mouth that he didn't mind shooting off all those years ago, and still will if someone sticks a camera in his face.

some off the many things he said this weekend include his take on hillary "the countess of cankles" clintons position on what she would do if sarah palin was ever elected president. i don't know how long ago the question was asked of her thighness, (got to thank mark levin for that one) but hillary said she would not move to canada but would be a frequent visitor. jesse opined canada is too cold, and that he would lose all hope in AMERICA, and move to mexico.

you mean even with obie fucking up shit left, right, and center, you think things would be worse under palin? loosen up the boa big man, it's cuttin' off the blood and oxygen flow to the think think think cell.

jesse also said that he did not support the use of the military in iraq, and that if he had been governor he would have refused to send his boys, the minnesota national guard. he went on to state you don't replace the 82nd (AIRBORNE) division with national guard troops. god i'd have loved to have seen you refuse that federalization order. i got to say i respect the mans service as a navy UDT during viet nam, but it appears that all the years of folding chairs to the forehead, tight spandex pants and steroids have taken a toll on him.

i guess he forgot the sacrifices and accomplishments of the 32nd infantry division, primarily comprised of guardsmen from MICHIGAN and wisconsin, who fought with great distinction in the pacific during WWII. or the old oklahoma national guard unit, the 45th infantry division, who fought in the med and central europe during WWII.

i love my country. i have served, and like all of you, support our troops, and, as lee greenwood sings, i would gladly stand and defend her still. but i have to ask, why do we take so damn long to recognize those who sacrificed in the defense of the REPUBLIC?

today after 66 years of being basically ignored, the surviving members of the WOMAN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS were awarded the congressional gold medal for their invaluable service during the SECOND WORLD WAR. there were 1,074 WASPs, who from 1942 to 1944 ferried new and repaired aircraft from factories to shipping depots, shuttled personnel, and trained male pilots and aircrews, thus freeing up the men to fight. 38 died during that time span. they flew it all; mustangs, thunderbolts, flying forts and super fortresses. in fact, they flew every type of aircraft in our inventory. over 12,000 aircraft delivered and 60 million miles logged.

how did we thank them? well at the time, they had to pay their fare to the training location. if they washed out, they had to repay the government for their room and board and transportation home. if they died, their families had to pay to have them shipped home, without military honors. as the war wound down, and the men returned stateside, they were kicked out.

it was not until evil republician BARRY GOLDWATER took up their cause in 1976-77 that the WASPs were recognized as military personnel and given partial military benefits. in 1984 they were awarded the WW II VICTORY MEDAL, and today, with their ranks depleted to around 200, they were given the congressional gold medal.

another terrorist attack?

breaking news!! 2 pentagon police officers have been wounded in a shooting at the subway that services the pentagon in washington. at 6:40 pm, a lone gunman walked up and shot the two officers, who returned fire striking the suspect. all 3 have been taken to area hospitals, and none of the injuries are thought to be life threatening. here is to wishing the officers a speedy recovery.

it will be very interesting how this story develops, terrorism, random violence or thwarted crime. my guess is terrorism, as even the dumbest criminal would have to know the pentagon platform would be guarded. of course it could be a continuation of the criminal element of society's war on law enforcement. wait and see i guess. stay vigilant brothers.

hero of the month: february

all that i can say about these two is that they personify the ideal of others over self.

on february 3 in stuart, florida, lifeguard DANIEL LUND noticed a kiteboarder about 1/4 of a mile from shore in distress. paddling out on his long board, LUND noted sharks and blood in the water, and that the kiteboarder, Stephen Schafer had been badly bitten. LUND was able to get Schafer onto his kite in an effort to shield him, and towed it 20 minutes back to shore through shark infested 6 to 8 foot swells, one handed, as he reassured Schafer. Schafer was conscious on the beach but sadly died at the hospital from his injuries.

on february 23 in littleton, colorado, DR. DAVID BENKE sprang into action when a gunman shot 2 students at the Deer Creek Middle School. BENKE tackled the suspect after his carbine jammed, and then with the assistance of others held the piece of shit until law enforcement arrived.

both LUND and BENKE claimed they were just doing their jobs, and LUND could almost convince me of that, rescuing a swimmer, but when that swimmer has been attacked by sharks? i'm sure that isn't in the job description. as for BENKE, he is a math teacher and track coach. jumping an active shooter probably isn't in the contract. BENKE choked up during a news conference, saying he wished he could have reacted sooner, and characteristic of many heroes, down played his role, claiming it was a team effort that got the shooter into custody.

good buddy ski let slip sometime back that i am in law enforcement. i put a skill uncle sugar taught me (after trading 4 solid and 1 partial year of my life) to good use. it has had it's ups and downs, just like everything else in life, and i have never had to worry about being laid off. overall i'd say the city i work for and i are about even.

one of the things that really sticks out about the job, is that people want to talk about the use of force by cops in general, and guns in particular. because we carry, people think we know something they don't about firearms. some of us do, most of us don't. i think i fall in the do category, based on my indentured servitude with uncle sug, and some training i have sought out on my own dime, and because i also used to be a hunter safety instructor.

people will usually ask questions after a high profile incident such as a shooting or a suspect taking a solid ass kicking like, "why didn't the cop shoot the perp in the hand or leg?" or "why did they hit that guy so many times with their billy clubs?" i usually take the time to explain, to the best of my ability, what the reasoning is for not shooting to wound, or why someone got "beat up" by officers who were trying to take a criminal suspect into custody.

during these times i often find that the citizen asking the questions has never fired a handgun or been involved in a serious fight. that their perception of how things work when everything goes to shit is based off tv, movies and newspaper articles written by other people who have never been there.

a case in point is an article, here, that ski forwarded to me back in august, that he was looking for my take on. well, here it goes. seems the usual suspects are at work in this article, blaming the cops for not only for the color of their skin, but also the race of the suspect they were called to check on. who it turns out, was, as reported, armed with a rifle, or, more accurately, carbine.

if he only needed someone to talk to, where was dad and girlfriend? is girlfriend the same woman who won't let him see the kids? dad says he would have put the gun down if asked, but girlfriend and a neighbor say the gun was already put down when the evil jack booted thugs mowed him down. a word of advice to the reporter and editor who allowed this shit to hit the fish wrap. at least try to show a bit of objectivity, and try to lock down your witnesses stories a little better. maybe interview whoever made the 9-1-1 call about the fight over the gun. they might not be as emotionally attached to the "victim" as dad and the current squeeze, and could give better insight into what really transpired that july night.

some will say i'm standing behind the blue wall of silence. was i there? do i really know what happened? no. but i have been involved in enough stuff to know people add and subtract what they want from stories to paint themselves, or their friends, in the best possible light. i also know that i have never met a cop who comes to work looking to off a minority, or anyone else for that matter. think about how far-fetched the idea that the story writer and the naacp is proposing is.

somewhere between 1 and 6 of these guys respond to this call, actually find a guy with a long gun, who dad says is essentially just lonely, and just looking for a shoulder to cry on, and then kill him. according to girlfriend and neighbor, they then conspire to cover it up, cause he wasn't armed or a threat.

try this sometime. get out the kids nerf guns. set it next to you on the couch or table or porch. next arm your buddy with a similar nerf gun. stay within the effective range. you are the" bad guy" he is the "cop". have him hold the nerf gun down to his side or behind his back or something, to simulate being nice and attentive, and in the holster, while you tell him your tale of woe. without warning, pickup your nerf gun and try to shoot him. i bet you hit him before he gets off a shot. why? because action beats reaction every time.

next, do the same thing with 6 other dudes, armed with nerf guns, who you let "surround" you. but tell them that when they sense that you have the ability and opportunity to cause them great bodily injury or death, and that they feel, by your actions, that their lives or any of the other "officers" are in jeopardy, that they can apply deadly force to you. let me know if you survive, and how many times you got hit.

i've been holding this back for sometime, but with all the recent murders of cops all across our great republic, i can't any longer. there has been something like 9 or 10 cops shot in the seattle area since halloween, 6 of whom i believe died. 3 killed in the oakland/san fran area. 3 in pittsburgh. a week ago a female pittsburgh officer was nearly killed by an armed robbery suspect she was trying to take into custody. his gun jammed, hers did not. today, a fresno, california detective was killed and two other officers were shot by someone they were looking to question. i could go on and on.

here is the point. don't jump to conclusions the next time the media reports the police brutalized some guy who was minding his own business, or swiss cheesed some dude because he was a different race than they happened to be. there is always more to the story than the editor allows to be printed. if the officers were wrong it will come out, everyone has cameras today. remember these officers have families they want to go home to, and are not societies punching bag.

ED MEESE, one of the original 80 signatories, was interviewed on the MARK LEVIN show tonight. i can't remember everything that they discussed, but it was enough to get me on the computer when i got home late. as you read it, remember that the founders pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor, to form our great REPUBLIC. millions of AMERICANS have died to preserve it, and isn't it about time WE stand and say NO MORE, to the agents of change for the worse?

the news today makes me laugh. first from the detroit free press, news that the swedish olympic hockey committee is pissed, because Red Wing JOHAN FRANZEN plans on playing 9 february. FRANZEN is a power forward, and one of the NHL's premier players. FRANZEN has been out 4 months after sustaining a torn ACL that required surgery. apparently team sweden is being criticized because they have left FRANZEN off the roster, and according to FRANZEN have not even contacted him. in addition, FRANZEN feels he would not be at 100% for the olympics and therefore does not want to play in them. team sweden is directing it's ire at the Red Wing organization, saying that the team is bringing FRANZEN back too soon due to fluctuating between 7th and 9th in the western conference. to this i say, maybe. but when has team sweden's doctors evaluated FRANZEN, and just how much of FRANZEN's $43 million dollar contract are they on the hook for? until you start paying the bills, shut it and be glad the guy was honest enough to not take up a roster spot and give someone else a chance.

come on, anders, you can't find another swede to fill the roster?

next, i see SCOTT BROWN was sworn in today to the senate. the guy he is replacing, Paul Kirk, said the the division in the senate needs to end, "there needs to be a climate change in the senate." what the fuck, over? i thought climate change was bad. rising oceans, dead polie bears, drought, famine, all the other bullshit. hey paul, look outside and get the shovel ready, cause DC is fixin' to get up to 2 feet of snow. also, please explain again why it is important for us all to get along when during W's administration all your party did was obstruct?

hero of the month: january

this month brings sad and glad news.

the deaths of 3 fine young men as a result of a traffic accident in zelienople, pennsylvania. volunteer fire fighters ELIJAH LUNSFORD and SAM BUCCI as well as their friend trevor barkley, drowned when the vehicle they were traveling in left a snow covered road and ended up in an ice covered pond during the last week of the month. they were reportedly headed to a training session when the accident occurred. i can think of lots of things 18 year old boys get into, but volunteering for potentially hazardous jobs in their communities isn't at the top of my list. for that reason alone, i consider them heroes, and role models to their peers also.

11 year old AUSTIN FORMAN went into his backyard in boston bar, british columbia, to get firewood on 2 january accompanied by his dog ANGEL. as AUSTIN turned to investigate a sound approaching him from behind, he saw a cougar leaping at him. ANGEL sprang into action, jumping the cat and gave AUSTIN the opportunity to retreat inside.. the big cat had the dog by the head and neck and was in the process of strangling ANGEL when police arrived and shot and killed the puma. ANGEL had surgery and is expected to recover, after nearly laying down her life, to protect her boy.

the wife brought home the sad news today, of the passing of another AMERICAN hero, LT.COL.LEE ARCHER. ARCHER was probably the most famous of the tuskegee airmen of world war II fame. ARCHER was among AMERICA'S first black pilots that began training at tuskegee university in 1941. graduating first in his class in 1943, ARCHER was commissioned as a 2nd lieutnant, and was assigned to the 302nd fighter squadron, 322nd fighter group, which fought in the mediterranean theater of operations.

on 12 october 1944, ARCHER became AMERICA'S first and only black ace, when he shot down 5 planes in combat, including 3 of nazi germany's very good fighters, the ME 109. ARCHER was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS, flew combat missions during the korean war, and retired after 29 years of service to THE REPUBLIC.

after he retired from the military in 1970, ARCHER joined general foods corp., becoming one of the era’s few black corporate vice presidents of a major AMERICAN company. among his other lifetime achievements, LT.COL. Bush. due to the tuskegee airmen's outstanding service during WWII, president harry truman desegregated the military in 1948 by executive order.

LEE ARCHER died in new york on 27 january 2010, at the age of 90.

the weekend

this was the first weekend i have had off since before thanksgiving. i'm not bitching, i earned a nice amount of change during that time frame and i used a good amount of it to buy something i've wanted for awhile.

a little cz side by side 20 gauge, with double triggers and an english stock. i like it due to the classic styling and the double triggers. more traditional, i think it hearkens back to a simpler time, and i can't wait to hunt it next fall.

in the mean time, i'll be shooting trap, and sporting clays with it. the wife and i went and broke it in this weekend, shooting trap, and for awhile i was scared she would out shoot me with my own gun. fear not loyal patrons, i prevailed. she is a good shot however, and gets better the more i critique her stance, follow through, etc.

i don't want to read any"you're a puss, shooting a 20, blah, blah, blah" comments. i've hunted a 12 for years, (mossberg 500-ugly, functional, heavy sumbitch) it will be sold soon, but i still have a remington 11-87 12 gauge. i'll keep it forever as the wife gave it to me years ago for Christmas, but i'll probably never hunt it as it is too pretty. i got the twenty 'cause she shoots a 20, and with the way ammo prices keep climbing, it just makes sense. additionally, cz's other(12's) side by sides don't come with dual triggers or the english stock.

last night we went to the local hockey teams first boxing match in their new barn.

it is a real nice building, but 3 fights, 2 near fights (double minors for roughing) and the near drunken DV behind us, reminded me why i don't like minor league hockey. i'll probably go back, but it's hard to support a team that appears not to understand the basics like, head up, stick on the ice, go to the net. or, support the man with the puck. pass to the open man, don't shoot into the crowd. worst offense i saw-starting a fight while your team has the puck-and is in scoring position.

some of that extra money i earned went to buy momma the gun that she'll be carrying after the ccw class next week.

today was the last chance she would get to practice prior to qualifying and i think she was a little nervous. again she is a good shooter, not good enough for me to put an apple on my head, but good enough i sure don't wanna piss her of if she's close to a pistole, either. so today found us at the indoor range. she had a few problems early, which i corrected with a couple of," what the fuck was that's." she says i'm very nurturing when it comes to firearms instruction, and i should consider doing it full time when i retire. or not.

anyway it was the best session yet and i'm sure she'll be fine next weekend. seeing how we were there i decided to shoot also. i brought along one of my all time favorites.

can you say timeless classic? j summ grew up on this old war horse. i think i might have even cried when uncle sugar took mine away and replaced it with that italian piece of shit the boys are suffering with currently. if you remember, i wrote about how years ago i nearly bought for myself what i recently bought for the wife. i chose Mr. Browning's 1911 instead. it's a springfield and the only thing i've ever changed was the grip screws. guys will spend ridiculous money to get a gun to shoot "right". most guns are more accurate then we are. i spent $350 on this dude new. you can drop $1000 or more on a kimber and more still on the nighthawk. oh, they're nice alright, but i'll put the springfield up against them anytime as far as accuracy goes. i found out some time ago that when it was made, somebody came back to work drunk or high or maybe just pissed at the boss, and dropped match parts into my basic gun. couple of guys have tried to buy her, but she stays with me.

so i'm shooting today and i start taking incoming. i saw shit flying back at me. not cool when we are talking 230 grains of lead and copper. i turn away, and get hit in the side by most of my flattened out bullet.

here are some other examples of what i had to dodge. bottom left is the culprit. no blood no foul, but i'm damn glad i got it in the side and not the face. i told the guys at the range but they didn't seem too concerned. for those of you out there who are shooters, it was blazer brass 230 grain FMJ. anyone else had problems like mine?

lot's of shooting, a good amount of fighting and a bit of hockey. not very romantic, but old girl seems happy. i know i am.

ever wonder why there are ZERO english restaurants? it's cause they eat shit like blood pudding-made with real blood, boil, not broil- boil steak, mutton(old sheep), and eels. that's right, eels. you know the snake- like fish.

if you sit down and this cat is the waiter, and he suggest the jellied eel, run.

and now scientists and average limey alike are up in arms over the dwindling numbers of the slimey bastards in the river thames.

seems there has been a 98% decrease in eels trapped last year in the thames compared to a 2005 count. the usual suspects are to blame; climate change, man made structures, GEORGE W.BUSH and some other parasites. i suspect the other parasites are zebra mussels, a little clam like bastard, which is probably fucking up a body of fresh water somewhere near you.

the eels are also disappearing from other european rivers and ecologists point out that the eels rapid decline could threaten the entire ecosystem. where is the worry over the great lakes and the threat posed by ocean going vessels which, over the decades have brought gobies, the afore mentioned zebra mussels, lampreys and alewives? but i digress.

i get to talk shit on my british cousins 'cause my great grandmother (on my mothers side) immigrated to canada from britain. i didn't really know her, but i do remember her daughter taking ground beef, forming it into a ball, dropping it into a pot of boiling water, then telling me the grey lump that resulted was a hamburger.

dad has a great story about taking some real nice beef (del monicos?), over for dinner before mom and him got married. he said grandma took the steaks into the kitchen and returned with some shriveled grey shit that resembled the dog steak he swears he was served in the navy while in port in lisbon, portugal. he said he nearly cried and never let grandma near beef he was eating again.

here is a tip, tommy. there are plenty of other fish in the sea, lay off the eel and try the grouper, salmon or snapper.

my copy of the AMERICAN RIFLEMAN arrived yesterday and brought the news of the passing of an AMERICAN warrior icon.

i first became aware of LEWIS MILLETT while stationed in the former west germany in the late 80's. the army liked to hang pictures of historical figures, to i guess inspire troops and foster an esprit de corps. above is a copy of that picture.

it depicts then CAPTAIN MILLETT leading what is considered to be the last bayonet charge by AMERICAN forces, in a company size formation, up hill 180, later changed to BAYONET HILL, near soam-ni, korea, on february 7, 1951.

for leading this action MILLETT was awarded the MEDAL OF HONOR, and the citation reads in part, that; CAPT. MILLETT distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action. while personally leading his company in an attack on a strongly held position, he noted that his 1st platoon was pinned down. MILLETT placed himself at the head of his two (remaining) platoons and with fixed bayonets led the assault. MILLETT bayoneted, clubbed ,and grenaded the enemy while urging his men forward. during the fierce onslaught, MILLETT was wounded but refused evacuation until the hill was secured. due to his dauntless leadership and personal courage, his men were so inspired, that they stormed the enemy position, and used their bayonets so effectively that the enemy fled in wild disorder.

a few years ago i purchased and read BEYOND GLORY *MEDAL OF HONOR HEROES IN THEIR OWN WORDS* by larry smith. smith went out and interviewed 24 MOH recipients .
MILLETT'S story was amazing. he volunteered in 1938 then deserted and went to canada, where he volunteered for their army,when he thought the U.S. would sit out the war. while station in average britian, MILLETT was able to get back in the U.S. army and was assigned to the 1st armored division who he served with in north africa. at kasserine, MILLETT shot down an attacking fighter plane.

MILLETT received a SILVER STAR and went on to see action at SALERNO and ANZIO. he also received a BRONZE STAR after calling down artillery fire, on his own position, near the cinquale canal in italy.

at the wars end, after having enlisted, deserted, joined the canadian army, reenlisted in the AMERICAN army, receiving the SILVER STAR, been court martialed for desertion, promoted to lieutenant,receiving the BRONZE STAR, participating in 7 campaigns and 3 amphibious landings, MILLETT was discharged and returned to civilian life. while in college in maine, he was recalled to active duty.

the summer of 1950 found MILLETT at the pusan perimeter in south korea where he again called in artillery on his own position. later still he was wounded in the leg and became an aerial observer. during this time MILLETT found a shot down fighter pilot, ordered his pilot to land and evacuate the fighter pilot while he stayed behind fighting off enemy infantry until his own plane returned.

MILLETT volunteered for a transfer to the infantry and became the company commander of E company 27th infantry regiment, THE WOLFHOUNDS. it was with them that MILLETT led the attack on hill 180, which he received the MOH for and 2 previous bayonet charges. MILLETT did this, as he was pissed over some enemy intel that was recovered saying AMERICANS were afraid of the bayonet.

MILLETT was awarded a DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS for the 2nd charge. MILLETT went on to start the RECONDO schools for the 101st AND 82nd AIRBORNE divisions. in 1960 MILLETT went to vietnam where he trained ARVN rangers and ended his combat career as PHOENIX team adviser, retiring as a colonel.

during his 35 year career, LEWIS MILLETT was awarded the MOH, DSC, SILVER STAR, 3 BRONZE STARS, 3 PURPLE HEARTS, and 2 LEGIONS OF MERIT as well as numerous other foreign and U.S. awards and citations. he refused all U.S. decorations for his service in southeast asia.

because of his protest of gerald ford's pardoning draft dodgers, who went to canada during the vietnam war, he was also pardoned by ford from his desertion conviction.

asked why he fought, MILLETT said; i believe in freedom, i believe as a free man it is my duty to help others under the attack of tyranny. if free men don't help others to retain or regain our freedom, then we'll lose it in the final analysis.

LEWIS MILLETT died at the age of 88 on november 14, 2009.

CASEY was awarded the PURPLE HEART and BRONZE STAR with V devise for valor as a result of his actions and sacrifice.

some have pointed out that other nations are also sending aid to haiti. that is true, to wit; china iceland, france,average britian, canada, mexico, dominican republic, venezuala are sending search and rescue teams with rescue dogs and gear to help locate survivors. sadly many will die by the time these assets arrive, due to foul weather and congestion at the 1 serviceable airport.
several of these countries are also sending medical teams, which will prove very beneficial to
survivors. still others are pledging funds.

all of this is great but the UN, the lefts beacon of hope and goodness, has pledged.........wait for it......$10 million dollars. the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA will contribute, initially.......$100 million dollars. the above listed countries total contributions look to equal less than half of AMERICA'S initial layout. obie had that laying around after the $789 billion dollar spending binge. i have no idea if this figure will include the MASSIVE military effort, but suspect it does not.

that's right libs, the AMERICAN military is the only military in the world that is sophisticated enough to undertake a mission of this size, and pull it off. AMERICA has 11 aircraft carriers, which can be deployed to events such as those occurring in haiti. aircraft carriers mean many things, including; helicopters for the delivery of humanitarian aid and search and rescue, fully equipped hospitals aboard ships with world class doctors. and because they are powered by evil NUCLEAR generators, they can pull into a port, run an "extension cord" and power up an average size city.

remember that the next time you disparage our military. test question. how many carriers does the UN own? how about the name of the country (ies) with the next largest contingent of carriers in service, that will be supporting the relief effort?

last night while looking at the net and the o'reilly factor, i saw that the guest host had former failed u.s. general (relieved as supreme commander of NATO), and failed presidential candidate wesley clark aka. ashley wilkes on the show. (ashley wilkes is how rush refers to clark.)

wesley/ashley was being asked to opine on the detroit airline bomber, and what went right or wrong and how he would handle it. i immediately became interested as wes ain't exactly known for making good decisions, like bombing the chinese embassy in hungary, which helped to get him removed as head of NATO. later in june of 2008, wes said this about john mccain, in his support of ABE II, " He hasn't been there and ordered the bombs to fall. He hasn't seen what it's like when diplomats come in and say, I don't know whether we're going to be able to get this point through or not," that mccain was,"untested and untried." bob schieffer,who was conducting the interview for face the nation, rightly went on to note, that Obama did not have any of those experiences, nor had he "ridden in a fighter plane and gotten shot down."

here i see that an unknown editorial writer over at the detroit free press is lamenting the fact that the dearborn, michigan police are asking for a delay in the release of an autopsy report on the death of luqman abdullah, aka christopher thomas, who was killed in a shootout with the fbi on october 28. the ironically self named luqman, was under investigation for i believe interfering with interstate commerce and his ties to terrorism. while the free press correctly points out that the dearborn police had nothing to do with either the case built against chris, or his death, they quickly jump to the conclusion that the police don't trust the public and are trying to hide something.

which drunk is asleep at the switch at the EPA? 20 years ago they were freaking the fuck out over acid rain. it poisoned lakes, turned sandstone buildings black, melted bronze statues, caused frogs to have multiple legs and fish multiple eyes.

because of this, environmental standards were tightened. coal fired electric plants had to install scrubbers, some types of coal could no longer be used. people even went so far as to throw lime (not the fruit) into lakes to sweeten the water.

i'm no tree hugger, but i'm not a scorched earth guy either. if we can clean things up, like the air and water, super! do it. but ask yourselves a question. does acid rain still exist? we never hear about it any more. did we win? is it in remission? did it ever exist at all, or was it the global warming scare of the last part of the last century?

fast forward to this week, when AP reports that the EPA in conjunction with the USDA, and the guardians of all things green, the obama administration, want farmers to increase the use of flue gas or synthetic gypsum on their crops.

this is a chalk like residue which accumulates on the scrubbers of...wait for it....coal fired electric plants!! it contains the heavy metals; mercury,lead, arsenic and some other shit. oh yeah, it is also is used in the manufacture of dry wall. this is the shit we were trying to remove from the atmosphere in the first fucking place!!

don't fear, americans!! your government is looking out for you. the EPA says, that the the heavy metals in the material are far less than the amount considered a threat to human health. Field studies have shown that mercury, the main heavy metal of concern because it can damage development of the human nervous system, doesn't accumulate in crops or run off fields in surface water at "significant" levels.

this business started under one of the bush administrations, but climate change barry is looking to increase its use. don't forget about the mercury in the CFC light bulbs he loves, or the mercury derivative thimerosal, the preservative in your defective H1N1 shot. i wonder if, taken together, these things are "significant", or should be considered a threat?

this, as the EPA is considering regulating this particular kind of waste, for the first time ever, and experts are saying that 1 out of every 100 to 110 children have some form of autism. i'm no scientist, but there has to be some negatives to this. i think my confidence in the government to fuck things up royally is well founded, based on bullshit like this.

so i wrote on november 29 how suprised i was that todd bertuzzi scored the shoot out game winner at the game we saw in st. louis. well, since my critique, he has scored 5 more goals, including 2 game winners, (nashville/anaheim).

first i just want to say, todd you are welcome. i know you took my words to heart, and have buckled down and manned up. keep up the good work and, seeing how it is Christmas, feel free to drop a little check in the mail in gratitude for my inspiration, which has helped to resurrect your career.

so it's a little early to be doling out the presents, but i just couldn't resist. i've been thinking for some time now about getting der frau her concealed carry (coming in january), and she needs her own smoke wagon. seems all of mine are the wrong size or color, don't match her shoes, etc.

based on that dilemma, i began to cruise the gun shows and shops, (god how i hated that), in search of something that would work. revolvers are nice and easy to use. pull the trigger. if it doesn't go POW!!, do it again. she is not so convinced. she really likes the glock 40 cal., and shoots it pretty well. problem is, when it hits 110 here in july, that sum-bitch will be cooling it in das auto.

so i was pretty much relegated to finding a mid- size semi. my criteria was it had to be at least 9mil, and give her the ability to pull the trigger again, without doing immediate action, in the event of a light primer strike. i looked around and took her to see what fit her hand. she really liked the taurus slim 709, but it appeared to have something similar to a glock safe action. i showed her the kel tec P9 and P11, true double actions, however they didn't match her shoes or nail polish.

frustrated(but enlightened), i struck out on my own. at a recent show i saw a little piece that hasn't been available in years. the star ultrastar. this was stars only polymer pistol and was imported from spain for only a short time. i damn near bought one for myself several years ago. it met all my requirements for ol' girl; DA/SA, 9mil, mid size and based on the others i showed her, it would fit her hand.

a couple of weeks went by and i called the guy from the show. he is local, and still had the gun and took about $50 off the show price. thursday i went and snatched it up, and then took it out for a test drive. shoots great. i think her first lesson in firearm ownership will be firearm maintenance (clean it)!!

ok, so it ain't overly romantic, but how many pots and pans, vacuums, or clothes irons does a woman really need? it is practical. damn few burglars, rapists or car jackers are frightened by tennis bracelets. i encourage anyone who can legally carry to get their permit and exercise their 2nd amendment right. fight crime, shoot back.

without a doubt, these two are the heroes of the month.

Sergeants MARK TODD and KIMBERLY MUNLEY of the ft. hood civilian police responded to the call of a mass murder in progress on NOV. 5 and went right into action against nidal hasan, an ARMY major who was shooting NON MUSLIMS as they prepared for deployment to southwest asia. some controversy has arisen in the wake of the shooting, which left 13 dead and more than 30 wounded including MUNLEY. initial reports were that MUNLEY was hit by friendly fire after taking hasan out, and later still that it was TODD that actually shot hasan. makes no difference to me, you are both hereos, and richly deserve the accolades.

honorable mention:

Cpl. CHRIS STURGEON and Off. TRENTON GINN of the topeka, kansas police. on NOV.17, Cpl. STURGEON arrived ahead of fire at a residence that was heavily involved smoke and flames and was told a person was trapped inside and could hear screaming. without hesitation, STURGEON kicked in a rear door and crawled into the inferno to search. STURGEON located a victim but had to keep retreating outside for fresh air. upon GINNS arrival, the two officers were able to work together to pull the victim to safety. both officers were taken to a local hospital due to smoke inhalation. keep in mind they did this without SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) or bunker gear (coats, helmets) like the firemen are issued. great job guys!!

a note about the hero of the month. these are people that i have read about. certainly there are others who deserve recognition. if you see a story, let me know so i can consider it, during the month the incident occurs. they can involve fire, ems, law enforcement and ordinary citizens, and of course our military.

rule detroit, the red wings rule the ice

so i took a little liberty with rule britaania. we just got back from st. louis and another RED WING thumping of the lowly blues. we have been going a couple of times a year for the last 10 years and the Wings have only lost once.

i wasn't so confident down 2 nothing at the end of the first, and 2-1 at the end of the second, i figured we came a long way to see a loss. but when draper tied it in the third i thought we were in pretty good shape, right up until there was about 6 minutes left in the game. st. louis went up 3-2 and with a minute left zetterberg scored from behind the net on a centering pass!!!, to send it into OT.

that is not one of the wings strong points so i was pretty apprehensive especially at the end of the 5 minutes as we went to the shootout. pavel scored for us and andy mcdonald scored for them 1-1 at the end of 3 shooters. the blues shoot first and their 4th guy missed so we trot out, todd bertuzzi?!

i liked todd about 12 or 13 years ago when he was young and still played hard. this is his second stint with the Wings, which i am less than happy about. i give the wife the what the fuck look(he only scored about 10 goals last season), and stand dejected as bertuzzi skates wide left, cuts back to the goal, roofs a backhander and ........scores!!!!!!! the only person more surprised than me in the arena was blues goaltender chris mason.

whatever, it counts, and we saw another great game. to all the blues fans with the dee-troit sucks chants--scoreboard.

the lions and thanksgiving

it is an nfl tradition. the lions will show up for their once yearly national tv broadcast and.......probably lose, on thanksgiving day. we have gone to a couple of the games, but it is hard as we live out of state. we have seen a loss to kansas city and a win over the pack. both were very good games. this time of year i'm thankful for many things, my health, my wife and the 3 beautiful children she gave me, my job and family, and also the lions.

what's wrong with this guy? nothing. if it wasn't for the lions and a running back from oklahoma state by way of wichita, kansas, dad and i might never have found common ground after moms death. i was off playing soldier in europe when mom passed. dad and i were so alike, according to mom, we couldn't get along, which was one of the reasons i signed up. after her death, i figured i wouldn't be hearing from home much. then the lions drafted the heisman trophy winner barry sanders. i remember watching (on AFN tape delayed) as barry returned a kick for a TD. i grabbed up some marks and called dad. the run had electrified the crowd, and helped us connect in a way we could not have before.

we shared the teams ups and downs, and were dazzled by barry's astounding array of moves, got to go to several games, and learned to accept our shared similarities and vast differences.

never a great team, the lions really took a nose dive in the shitter when barry unexpectedly retired after 10 frustrating seasons. they set an all time record by losing all 16 games last year.
my heart sank when we took matt stafford number 1 in the draft. i watched as he beat a mediocre michigan state (favorite college team) in the capital one bowl. his performance, i felt was also mediocre. i would have rather the lions taken an offensive lineman, and gone after tebow this year.

fast forward to november 22, 2009. stafford, after getting smashed at the end of regulation against cleveland, comes back into the game moaning and wincing and throws a TD to give the lions a tie and win on jason hanson's PAT. in this gutty performance, stafford proved he has the heart of a lion. we're 2 and 8!!!!!!

dad and i laughed about our win/loss record for awhile, and are already plotting the next draft.

so while it may seem silly to some, i can say with PRIDE i'm thankful for the lions on thanksgiving. i think mom would be thankful for them too.

that little saying is everywhere. any over the counter medicine-it's on the label. going to start exercising-check with your doctor first. going to see about taking some pharmaceuticals so it'll get stiff again? check with your doctor to see if you are healthy enough to engage in sexual activity. nobody worries about you more than mom, except your doctor.

that's until this week. seems the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (the government) has broken with the American Cancer Society and its long years of suggestion that women conduct monthly self breast exams, and beginning at 40, have yearly mammograms.

the study by U.S.P.S.T.F. claims that self exams are worthless and the value of doctor administered exams is unknown. based on that, and i hope some medical studies, the government determined that women should start getting mammograms at 50 then every two years until age 75. why not 74 or 76, round numbers, to match the round thingies?

here is where it gets personal for me. mom developed breast cancer in her mid 40's and was dead by 52. had she been following the governments new guidelines, i doubt she would have made it to the age of their first recommended mammogram. i know she suffered, but i'm glad for those extra years we had.

from what i can see,this is to more equally align us with the rest of the world as the WHO recommends every 2 years and average britian says every third year is ok for mammograms. ladies, looks like you will be the crash test dummies for the Lincoln of Our Times socialized medicine program. i hope for your own benefit and those you love, you continue with the monthly self checks and yearly mammograms. i still think early detection saves lives.

alright commodore, get the fucks out the way, it's my turn to talk.

didn't get to see the lincoln of our times speech yesterday as i was at work. so'kay, i wouldn't have watched anyway.

heard a sound byte which prompted me to checkout the transcript, as a couple of things stuck in my mind.

the nobel prize winner stated, 'America will not let you down. We will take care of our own.

And to those who are still serving in far flung places today, when your tour ends, when you see our flag, when you touch our soil, you will be home in an America that is forever here for you, just as you have been there for us. That is my promise--our nations promise--to you.'

ideas anyone? does that, 'forever here for you', include the department of homeland security sending out advisories on returning vets having possible anti-government leanings, which could cause them to become right wing terrorist? does 'forever here for you', mean as you, mr. president, procrastinate and dither about sending more troops to help win the fight you described as the right war?

i'll say this for the guy, he is learning. in delivering the teleprompters 17 or 18 paragraph speech, it took barry until the 12th, 13th, and 14th paragraphs to really mention himself in a self aggrandizing way. who said he was untrainable?

you want me to say what? ah, fuck no!

barry still has some rough edges, and has not let go of his liberal elitist views as he concluded with, 'There will be a day when these servicemen and women step out of uniform. They will build families and lives of their own. God willing, they will grow old. And someday, their children and their children's children, will gather here to honor them.'

this may come as a shock to you dear leader, but those service members lives already belong to themselves. most have families currently, and those kids you might have seen crying at funerals (when you are not too busy playing golf, accepting a peace prize, or sucking up trying to get the olympics) are that service members children, not some DNC plant whose mom worked in/on your campaign.

an open letter to our veterans

on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, in a train car parked at a siding in versailles, france, a peace treaty was signed, putting an end to 'the war to end all wars.' what was hoped to ring in a bright future has been relegated to history. today we remember armistice or veterans day.

today, take the time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of veterans of past and present wars, and remember, it is through their devotion to duty, love of country, and gift of life, that freedoms light has continued to shine, down those long 91 years.

today i want to say thank you. thank you for enduring the cold of bastogne, the po river valley, roberts ridge and the frozen hell of the chosin . the sweltering heat of guadalcanal, the a shau valley and the sunni triangle.

for the malaria, dysentery, pneumonia, trench foot, frost bite, gulf war syndrome and agent orange sickness you have suffered, thank you.

for all of the christmases, 4th of july barbecues, birthdays, anniversaries, first proms, football games missed, due to deployments or just field training exercises, thank you.

for putting up with the household goods lost in transit, during moves from one duty station to the next, the screwed up pay, the inadequate or unavailable family housing, thank you.

for friends made and lost during times many would say are better forgotten, thank you.

on veterans day remember this; every time you get in your car and take the kids to school, go to the store, work, the gym, a restaurant, it is because some young man or woman literally gave up everything they had for a certain period of time, and in some cases forever. all so that you can enjoy freedom and a standard of living that are the envy of the world.

grandma and grandpa immigrated from canada. i was raised in a northern climate, where a trip to a foreign country cost 50 cents and took 5 minutes. the wait is much longer now and i need a passport.

i grew up watching hockey night in canada, complete with peter puck between periods, and so many lanny macdonald references you thought he never left the ice. for the last several years i have purchased nhl center ice, to entertain myself and the brood. i also get the nhl network, which includes hockey night in canada with all the pre-game and intermission stuff.

that means hockey broadcasting legend don cherry. grapes spent most of his career in the minors, (ahl) and made his name on tv, with his outrageous suits and unapologetic commentary. love him or hate him, his controversial style keeps people watching to see what's next.

This is a toned down Don Cherry look.

something i personally admire him for is his support for the troops. since the war, don has consistently recognized fallen canadian soldiers killed in the war on terrorism. tonight as the wings took on the leafs, it was no different.

in addition to the hockey hall of fame game, canada as well as the u.s. is remembering veterans day. 3 former wings; hull, robitaille and captian cup, stevie y were recognized in a special pregame introduction of this year's inductees. at the first intermission, during coaches corner, cherry reminded the viewers who the true hall of famers were, as the CBC and cherry took an estimated 2 full minutes to show the names and faces of canada's recent war dead.

this is a national broadcast, and watching is as much a cultural norm as placing ones hand over their heart during the nation anthem, fireworks on the 4th, and the evening news with walter kronkite used to be here in the states. think of the last time an american "co-anchor" on a major weekly broadcast did this. take your time, i'll give you all you want. can't come up with an example can you?

neither could i. don isn't one dimensional either. he regularly recognizes cops and firefighters killed in the line of duty, and kids who succumb to disease. and there is true emotion on display when he does this.

in a country that takes special measures to remember and celebrate her war veterans, cherry stands apart in my mind.

as an american of canadian lineage, i could not be prouder of the example you set. god bless you grapes.

never a soldier

nidal hasan was never a soldier. not in our army. not in my army. he wore the uniform and lived in the housing, worked in the facilities, drew his pay and accepted the salutes of those he was appointed over. but he was never a soldier.

he was a doctor, never went to the field, or even deployed from the states. what is a soldier? it's the kid down the street, who can't get along with his dad, cause they are too much alike. he is a patriot who wants to give back, serve. or who can't currently find a job in the civilian sector, due to high unemployment, like the 10.2% we currently have with obama. it's the guy bored with the confines of his small to medium sized town or the ridiculous crime rates in his big city, longing for something else, an adventure. or who needs a way to save for college.

once in, he discovers he is just like the rest of the shaved heads in camo. he becomes a boot size, pants size, blouse size, weapons number. he becomes 7 out of the next 6 in the chow hall. he is fire guard from 0100 to 0300 or CQ from 2300 to 0100. after the basic stuff he begins to learn a skill. he becomes an 11B, 13C, 19K, 21E, 31B, 42A or 68W.

as he builds skill and learns and demonstrates leadership qualities, he advances. and makes friends that last a lifetime. and due to being taken out of the comfort zone that is his neighborhood or hometown, he learns responsibility and trust. and respect. that is something nidal hasan never learned, in my opinion.

i doubt nidal hasan ever saw the soldiers creed, or read it or understood its meaning and significance. some will see it as just words, but it is a pact. an agreement between me and the guy to my left and right. i am here with you, rely on me, together we can do this, you are not alone.

nidal hasan put self before others and a radical ideology above his duty to what were supposed to be his brothers in arms. a true soldier shares his food, water, shelter, socks, whatever with another troop. and have given up their lives on so many occasions, for men they don't even know, just because 'those guys are pinned down', or 'that guy in the open has been shot by a sniper and needs help.'

he never understood this, others over self, sacrifice, only blind following of his faith, and slaughtered his brothers. strip him of the uniform and any decorations, he was never a soldier.
